To the chagrin of the Bitcoin community, Musk simply replied: \u201cIndeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Indeed<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1394001894809427971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>With Musk\u2019s popularity already dwindling within the crypto community after he criticized the energy efficiency of Bitcoin amid Tesla\u2019s suspension of support for vehicle purchases using BTC, his one-word comment has elicited further condemnation from many leading figures in cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Peter McCormack (who has since changed his handle to \u201cMcObnoxious\u201d), the host of the <em>What Bitcoin Did <\/em>podcast, stated that Musk\u2019s recent criticism of BTC is \u201cpoorly informed,\u201d adding thhis support for Dogecoin may make him \u201cperfect troll\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ Dear <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elonmusk<\/a>. Your recent poorly informed criticism of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bicoin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bicoin<\/a> + support for Doge may be the perfect troll&#8230;or you might actually believe this (God I hope not).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Peter McObnoxious (@PeterMcCormack) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterMcCormack\/status\/1393971202738302986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>McCormack\u2019s comments appear to have riled up Musk, with Tesla\u2019s CEO <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1393979913624072194\">stating<\/a>: \u201cObnoxious threads like this make me want to go all in on Doge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Yearn Finance developer \u2018banteg\u2019 also jumped in to imply that Musk\u2019s apparent support for Dogecoin over Bitcoin has comprised an elaborate pump n dump scheme, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantg\/status\/1394017241759469574\">stating<\/a>: \u201cI guess you really need all retail in the world to unload 28.34% of Dogecoin supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, DOGE prices have dumped 32% since their peak of $0.73 on May 8, with losses accelerating following Musk\u2019s appearance on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> on the same day. <\/p>\n<p>Musk also asserted he has a superior understanding of money than crypto analysts due to his previous executive positions at PayPal\u2019s precursor, stating: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHey cryptocurrency \u2018experts\u2019, ever heard of PayPal? It\u2019s possible \u2026 maybe \u2026 that I know [more] than you realize about how money works.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Microstrategy CEO and prominent Bitcoin proponent, Michael Saylor, highlighted the differences between PayPal and Bitcoin, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michael_saylor\/status\/1393757359881793538\">stating<\/a>: \u201cThe world needs a decentralized, secure, deflationary store of value like<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bitcoin?src=hashtag_click\"> #Bitcoin<\/a>. much more than it needs the more centralized, less secure, inflationary medium of exchange that you describe above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PayPal\u2019s lead engineer, Daniel Brain, also chimed in to emphasize the expanded utility Bitcoin offers over PayPal. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Even at PayPal, we understand the difference between a settlement layer and a transactional layer. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daniel Brain (@bluepnume) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bluepnume\/status\/1393857753559420930?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The comments suggest relations between Saylor and Musk may be cooling.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2020, Saylor\u2019s leading business intelligence firm Microstrategy became the first prominent mainstream company to add Bitcoin to its balance sheet when it purchased 21,000 BTC for an aggregate price of $250 million.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, Musk was spotted asking Saylor about the ease with which a large firm could purchase hundreds of millions\/billions worth of Bitcoin. The friendly advice given precipitated Tesla\u2019s own purchase the following month. <\/p>\n<p>In February, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> broke that Tesla had invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin sending prices skyrocketing to new all-time highs above $43,000 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Saylor\u2019s defense of Bitcoin today, Musk <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1393991411524120576\">tweeted<\/a>: \u201cHe should wear outfit for Halloween, but with \u2018Bitcoin\u2019 tattooed high on thighs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BTC is down 10% over the past 24 hours, having last traded hands for $43,400.<\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"markets_outlook\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
