“Dana White-John Oliver feud escalates into onesies and mugs<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Dana White\u2019s lack of originality won\u2019t help him win a war of words.<\/p>\n

After the UFC President trademarked \u201cUFSea\u201d \u2014 a term jokingly created by John Oliver, in reference to White\u2019s COVID-19-inspired plan to hold fights on an island \u2014 the HBO host escalated his verbal assault on White during the May 31 episode of \u201cLast Week Tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver had previously criticized White \u2014 who admitted he\u2019d stolen Oliver\u2019s \u201cUFSea\u201d label \u2014 for unsafely and unnecessarily holding events in the midst of a pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not remotely mad here. I want you to use that name. In fact, I think you should let us rename all of your events, because frankly, you\u2019re not very good at it,\u201d Oliver said. \u201cTake UFC 249, it\u2019s just your logo plus a number. Where\u2019s the pizzaz there? How about this, UFC: Knuckle Opera? Or Dust Up at the Beef Factory? Or Large Hamboy Collider? It\u2019s better, right? Who doesn\u2019t want to see some hamboys collide right now? Honestly, even the name Dana White could use little punch up. It doesn\u2019t sound like the head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, it sounds like the third-best real estate agent in Sacramento or a video where a white woman calls the cops on a black family for smiling too hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not mad at Tug Slabmeat for stealing our idea for \u2018UFSea.\u2018 We may not even be the first person he stole them from. He only filed for the \u2018Fight Island\u2019 trademark a week after a TMZ reporter suggested to him he call it that.\u201d<\/p>\n

White was bothered by Oliver\u2019s initial criticism of UFC fights continuing, which the former claims was improperly portrayed as a use of \u201cselective facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that he\u2019s done here that annoyed me was accusing us of using \u2018selective facts,\u2019 because facts are to me what other peoples\u2019 ideas are to Dana White: something I\u2019m very passionate about,\u201d Oliver said. \u201cWhat app<\/a>arently upset him was that in our piece we pointed out that three people, a UFC fighter and his two cornermen, all tested positive for coronavirus before a recent event, underscoring the fact that it seems impossible to return to sports completely without risk right now. White responded on Twitter<\/a> to say \u2018we had three events, not one,\u2019 which is completely irrelevant, and that those three positives came from 1,100 tests, which does initially seem to minimize it \u2013 until you learn that all those tests were administered to just 300 people. Basically, Dana was quoting a larger number to make the positive results look less significant, which seems like, I don\u2019t know, a selective fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver, 43, then ridiculed White, 50, for UFC\u2019s past trademarks, one of which \u2014 \u201cYou Will Submit\u201d \u2014 is now being printed on merchandise for sale at a site set up by the HBO show.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I think Dana White\u2019s just looking for a fight here. In fact, I\u2019m almost certain that he is because he\u2019s literally trademarked the phrase, \u2018Dana White Lookin\u2019 for a Fight.\u2019 And as we learned by looking up his filing for the UFC, it\u2019s just one of the many phrases that he\u2019s trademarked in the past. There\u2019s \u2018Fight Library,\u2019 which is excellent, \u2018Chicken Monster,\u2019 which is somehow even better, and \u2018Baddest Motherf*cker,\u2019 which I always assumed was owned by Samuel L. Jackson. However, interestingly, UFC\u2019s filing for that cites only handful of potential uses, among them, toy figures and action figures, which just makes sense. It\u2019s the perfect phrase to have on a child\u2019s toy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when we started looking deeper, we actually realized that there are a number of trademarks they\u2019ve applied for and got and then let expire, my favorite of which is \u2018You Will Submit,\u2019 which they\u2019ve trademarked for use on baby booties, fanny packs, and walking canes; because nothing says I\u2019m going to beat you into submission like a baby with a cane wearing a fanny pack.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, since Dana took something that we came up with, we\u2019re going to return the favor. Guess who is now officially in the process of owning the trademark \u2018You Will Submit\u2019? I\u2019ll give you a clue, it\u2019s got two thumbs, it\u2019s sheltering in a white void, and it\u2019s about to sell this baby onesie, which you can find at tugslabmeatsbabypalace.com. Who is the \u2018Baddest Motherf*cker\u2019 now, Dana?\u201d<\/p>\n

With Fight Island slated to open on July 11, White was able to slip in a subtle nod to his beef with Oliver during a TMZ Sports interview on Friday: The UFC boss slyly sipped from a \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d mug.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
