“#Gov. Greg Abbott boasts zero COVID deaths amid Texas reopening<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott \u2014 whose controversial early coronavirus reopening plan was slammed by President Biden as \u201cNeanderthal thinking\u201d \u2014\u00a0boasted that the state had zero daily COVID-19 deaths on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday Texas reported: 0 Covid related deaths\u2013the only time that\u2019s happ<\/a>ened since data was tracked in March, 2020,\u201d the Republican governor said on Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n

He added that the state also had the \u201clowest 7-day Covid positivity rate ever\u201d and\u00a0\u201cthe fewest Covid cases in over 13 months.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while the Lone Star State tallied zero fatalities that day, officials in the highly populated Dallas County\u00a0no longer report new\u00a0coronavirus data on Sundays \u2014 and the CDC\u2019s tracker<\/a> shows that Texas had 305 coronavirus deaths overall last week.<\/p>\n

Abbott\u2019s assertion came after he lifted the statewide mask mandate on March 2 \u2014 declaring \u201cit\u2019s time to reopen Texas 100 percent,\u201d\u00a0sparking a fiery back-and-forth between him and Biden.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last thing, the last thing you need is Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime everything is fine, take off your mask,\u201d Biden said of the decision, at a time when many Americans adults were still not eligible to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n

Abbott quickly fired back at\u00a0Biden \u2014 insisting it\u2019s the president who has primitive policy logic.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, it obviously is not the type of thing that the president should be saying,\u201d Abbott said on \u201cFox & Friends.\u201d \u201cBut, second, he kind of said it on the worst day he could have, because the same day he said that in Texas, the Biden administration was releasing illegal immigrants into our communities who had COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThe Biden administration was exposing Texans to COVID. That is a Neanderthal-type approach to dealing with the COVID situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Texas nevertheless reopened businesses, including the Texas Rangers\u2019 stadium, Globe Life Field, last month.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Texas reported 42 new COVID-19 deaths and a seven-day positivity rate of less than 5 percent, according to the CDC. By contrast, New York reported 11 new deaths and a seven-day positivity rate of less than 5 percent.<\/p>\n

A total of 650 more coronavirus cases were reported in Texas on Sunday, including 595 new cases, according to the Dallasnews.com<\/a>, which noted county health officials don\u2019t report new coronavirus data on Sundays.\n <\/div>\n
