\n Long Island\u2019s largest shopping mall reopened Friday for the first time in nearly four months \u2014 with a trickle of wary shoppers dropping by for a little retail therapy.<\/p>\n

Customers were required to put on face masks and practice social<\/a> distancing during their jaunts to Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, which has been closed since March 19 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some stores were even conducting temperature checks before letting patrons browse.<\/p>\n

But no one seemed to mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see everybody just trying to adhere to the guidelines,\u201d said Ed Inocent, 38, who lives in Brooklyn, after popping into Gap and Macy\u2019s. \u201cSo for me, there\u2019s nothing to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bev Laskin, of East Meadow, was hoping to beat the crowds and buy a new ring at Pandora.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to get here early before it gets crowded,\u201d Laskin said. \u201cAs long as we stay away from everyone and do what we need to do I feel pretty good about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran cheered the opening of Roosevelt Field, which has more than 260 retail stores and employs some 4,000 people. She said the mall generates $88 million in sales tax revenue a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe malls reopening is such a huge deal for us. They generate a lot of money in property taxes,\u201d said Curran at a morning press conference.\u00a0\u201cThis is a huge economic anchor for us, it\u2019s a revenue generator and we have fallen off a fiscal cliff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some big-box stores like Macy\u2019s and JCPenney have been open since late June. Only malls with high-efficiency air filtration systems were allowed to reopen Friday as part of Phase Four fo the state\u2019s reopening plan.<\/p>\n

Business at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove and Walt Whitman Shops in South Huntington also resumed Friday.<\/p>\n

At Roosevelt, some stores remained closed, including Bath and Body Works, Foot Action and Express. The restaurants in the food court were open for takeout only and hand sanitizing stations were dotted throughout the mall. Some seating areas were also roped off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was disapp<\/a>ointed that not all the stores were open,\u201d said Ivona Krstulovic, 47, who went on a three-hour shopping spree with her 13-year-old son. \u201cI know some people still don\u2019t feel safe going but I can only speak for myself and I am excited. I was never an online shopper. I like the shopping experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad of two Tom McDonough, 31, said he felt more comfortable limiting his time in the mall \u2014 and opted instead to order online for pickup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going in, we\u2019re not going to go walk around, in and out real quick,\u201d said McDonough, who was with his wife and kids. \u201cI\u2019m not going to browse and window shop and do impulse buying. I go to where I know I need to go and then I\u2019m out.\u201d<\/p>\n

There have been 42,232 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,190 deaths across Nassau and Suffolk counties since Thursday, according to data compiled by News<\/a>day.<\/p>\n
