“#Giant Marilyn Monroe statue sparks backlash in Palm Springs<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Marilyn Monroe\u2019s legendary rump is getting a bum rap.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

With her bodacious bottom perched 26 feet over Palms Springs, a supersized statue of the late screen goddess \u2014 posed with her skirt up \u2014\u00a0has sparked a booty backlash in California.<\/p>\n

And the fact that kids are going to be getting a load of Monroe\u2019s panties is the top concern.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s literally going to be mooning the [Palm Springs Art Museum]\u201d Elizabeth Armstrong, a spokesperson for a new Change.org petition, told NPR<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With more than 40,000 signatures collected, Armstrong\u2019s online call-to-action demands Monroe\u2019s backside get the boot out of Coachella Valley.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The cheeky sculpture \u2014 aptly named \u201cForever Marilyn\u201d\u2014 is a stainless steel shrine inspired by Monroe\u2019s iconic dress-billowing subway grate scene in the 1955 blockbuster \u201cThe Seven Year Itch.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The statuesque stunner stood as one of the desert\u2019s hottest tourist attractions during its initial run as a Palm Springs landmark from 2012 to 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But now, as \u201cForever Marilyn\u201d makes its permanent return to the center of the city seven years later, members of the community are arguing that it\u2019s sending an ass-backwards message to children who visit the Palm Springs Art Museum.\u00a0(The monument is slated to stand at the entrance of the institution \u2014 with Monroe\u2019s well-rounded rear to visitors as they exit the facility.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thought of those kids leaving our museum and having the first thing they see is the undergarments and underwear of this enormous Marilyn sculpture would be highly offensive,\u201d said Louis Grachos, director of the Palm Springs Art Museum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Grachos reportedly first expressed his concerns about the sculpture to the city council in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But his cries over Monroe\u2019s unmentionables apparently went unheard. Officials ruled that the provocative piece be placed in front of the museum for the next three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to kids being flashed by the full-figured figurine, protesters contend that the monolith is \u201csexist,\u201d and that its placement goes against city codes and highway planning guidelines.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the managing director at the Palm Springs Hilton and the head of PS Resorts, Aftab Dada, says \u201cForever Marilyn\u201d is a welcomed addition to the city\u2019s sights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe makes [the] majority of the people very happy,\u201d said Dada, who spent years fighting for the saucy statue\u2019s return to the Springs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe photos taken, and being transmitted all over the world, will do nothing but benefit the city of Palm Springs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dada and the PS Resorts purchased the eye-popping effigy of Monroe \u2014 who died of a barbiturate overdose in 1962 \u2014 for $1 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He plans to commission a cost-benefit analysis of \u201cForever Marilyn,\u201d including her effect on museum attendance, to determine the statue\u2019s overall value to Palm Springs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to conduct [an] independent research study and notify the city what the economic impact and benefit she has been,\u201d Dada said.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s a good thing they\u2019re taking Monroe\u2019s\u00a0problematic patootie seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Because as the celebrated Hollywood sweetheart once famously said: \u201cI don\u2019t mind making jokes \u2014 but I don\u2019t want to look like one.\u201d<\/p>\n
