Hollywood has been trying to say hello to a\u00a0Scarface<\/em><\/strong> remake for a few years now, and it recently found an interesting, if surprising, new director in the form of\u00a0Luca Guadagnino<\/strong>. Working with a script<\/a> by the Coen Brothers<\/strong>, the\u00a0Call Me By Your Name<\/em> filmmaker is tackling the remake of the 1983\u00a0Brian De Palma<\/strong> movie starring Al Pacino<\/strong>, itself a remake of a film from 1932. While the \u201932\u00a0Scarface<\/em> was set in the 1920s, and the \u201983\u00a0Scarface<\/em> took place in 1980,\u00a0Guadagnino says his\u00a0Scarface<\/em> is going to be \u201cvery timely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since at least 2011, Universal has been hoping to remake\u00a0Scarface<\/em>, the Brian De Palma crime epic that starred Al Pacino as a Cuban immigrant who comes to America and sets up an empire built on cocaine. First,\u00a0David Ayer was working on the script, with\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> series<\/a> director\u00a0David Yates in talks to helm. The project then passed from Yats to filmmaker\u00a0Pablo Larra\u00edn before eventually ending up in the hands of\u00a0Antoine Fuqua. Fuqua was planning to direct a script from\u00a0Wolf of Wall Street<\/em> director Terence Winter, with\u00a0Diego Luna set to star in the lead. As time ticked on, the Coen Brothers were brought in to work on the script as well. This version of the project got very close to becoming a reality, with a planned shooting start of October 2018.<\/p>\n

However, that never happened. And by 2020, both Fuqua and Luna had parted ways with the material. At that point,\u00a0Call Me By Your Name<\/em> and\u00a0Suspiria<\/em> director\u00a0Luca Guadagnino was brought in to direct, with the Coen Brothers script still in place. Now, Guadagnino is opening up a bit about what we can expect from his\u00a0Scarface<\/em>. Speaking with Variety, the filmmaker said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first\u00a0Scarface<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0Howard Hawkes\u00a0was all about the prohibition era. Fifty years later,\u00a0Oliver Stone\u00a0and\u00a0Brian De Palma\u00a0make their version, which is so different from the Hawkes film. Both can stand on the shelf as two wonderful pieces of sculpture. Hopefully ours, forty-plus years later, will be another worthy reflection on a character who is a paradigm for our own compulsions for excess and ambition. I think my version will be very timely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Guadagnino added: \u201cPeople claim that I do only remakes, but the truth of the matter is cinema has been remaking itself throughout its existence. It\u2019s not because it\u2019s a lazy way of not being able to find original stories. It\u2019s always about looking at what certain stories say about our times.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not entirely sure what Guadagnino\u2019s \u201ctimely\u201d\u00a0Scarface<\/em> will entail. Is it going to focus more on the immigration angle? Instead of cocaine, will the new Scarface be dealing more with opioids? Or maybe this\u00a0Scarface<\/em> will be a loud, angry, stupid, rich white guy who has everything handed to him his entire life and then somehow becomes President of the United States. That\u2019s pretty timely.\u00a0I will say that while I\u2019m not exactly champing at the bit for a new\u00a0Scarface<\/em>, I do enjoy Guadagnino\u2019s work. I was particularly impressed with his fresh new take on\u00a0Suspiria<\/em>. If he can bring that same freshness to\u00a0Scarface<\/em>, we might be in for something special.<\/p>\n
