Booming blockchain-based movement, explained<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>These aren\u2019t your grandpa\u2019s trading cards.<\/p>\n<p>NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, have taken the world by storm this year. When Christie\u2019s auctioned off an NFT for more than $69 million in March, it propelled the concept squarely into the public spotlight \u2014 with everything from iconic sports moments to memes being memorialized into NFTs and sold often for staggering prices.<\/p>\n<p>But the movement can seem daunting and confusing to outsiders. Here is what it\u2019s all about:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_an_NFT\"><\/span><strong>What is an NFT?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Fundamentally, NFTs are one-of-a-kind, verifiable digital assets that are traded on blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a high-tech way of saying it\u2019s a bit of data representing something unique, or at least scarce, that allows the owner to prove the asset is theirs. <\/p>\n<p>In that way, they\u2019re a bit like limited-edition sneakers, or collectable stamps. But instead of receiving the physical objects, buyers of NFTs receive a digital file that claims ownership of some asset, whether it be a piece of digital art, a sports highlight, song \u2014 or even a fart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NFTs differ from cryptocurrency in that there are many bitcoins and they\u2019re all interchangeable, whereas NFTs each have a unique identifying code that exists on the blockchain. Put another way, NFTs are not interchangeable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that NFTs create a degree of scarcity on the internet, where most things currently exist in infinite supply. Fundamentally, a blockchain is a decentralized public ledger that records transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Various blockchains have features that may or may not support the creation of NFTs tied to that ledger. The Ethereum blockchain, which is home to the digital token ether, allows multiple software developers to build apps on its network, making it a particularly attractive home to NFTs, although there are other blockchains that support the necessary tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The digital file of whatever asset has been minted as an NFT is recorded on the blockchain, making it easy to verify ownership and trade NFTs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_the_same_as_cryptocurrency\"><\/span><strong>Is it the same as cryptocurrency?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While NFTs are built and recorded using the same technology that powers cryptocurrencies, they\u2019re different in important ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The biggest difference is that cryptocurrencies are, by design, fungible, meaning that they can be traded or exchanged for one another. Digital coins are also supposed to be equal in value, which means that one bitcoin is always equal in value to another bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of what makes digital coins similar to traditional currencies like the US Dollar, and an important feature that crypto zealots believe will help digital coins replace centralized currencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NFTs are different in that there\u2019s no guarantee that any one NFT is equal to another. Whereas cryptocurrencies are designed to behave like physical currencies, NFTs are more like physical collectables such as art.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_I_buy_an_NFT_%E2%80%93_and_should_I\"><\/span><strong>How can I buy an NFT \u2013 and should I?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In order to buy an NFT, you\u2019ll have to first find a marketplace. More niche marketplaces have emerged, too, such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nbatopshot.com\/\">NBA Top Shot <\/a>for basketball video highlights-turned-NFTs.<\/p>\n<p>Before you purchase from a marketplace, it\u2019s worth figuring out what type of digital wallet is required to store the asset and what kind of currency you\u2019ll need to complete the sale. Some marketplaces will require you to pay in cryptocurrencies like ether or bitcoin, while others will accept US Dollars, but might charge you a fee for converting it into crypto.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for whether you should buy one, there are a few different reasons people find the market attractive, and proponents point to futuristic uses that could prove valuable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some people might be drawn to the market for practical reasons, such as being able to make an image your profile picture on social media without fear of a copyright infringement. And increasingly, there are video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s that incorporate NFTs, giving users special features.<\/p>\n<p>Others view the market in the same way collectors view the luxury art market: a place for value speculation. These buyers believe that the value of the NFT they want to purchase will rise over time, though some investors have scoffed at the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Liu, co-founder of Origin Protocol, a marketplace that launches NFTs, equated their value to traditional art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a million copies of the Mona Lisa circulating, either as physical or digital images, all over the world, but everyone knows that there\u2019s only one,\u201d Liu said. \u201cEven though there are still other digital copies, there\u2019s one that\u2019s basically been authenticated by the creator of this content.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_sell_an_NFT\"><\/span><strong>How to sell an NFT<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The process of selling an NFT can vary based on the marketplace, but there are several user-friendly options.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll typically upload your asset \u2014 noise, video, image or whatever it may be \u2014 to the marketplace, then follow the instructions to \u201cmint\u201d it, or turn it into an NFT. You\u2019ll often be able to include a description of the work and suggested pricing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then the marketplace will usually host an auction at a set time and connect the winner of the auction with the creator of the NFT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_some_examples_of_NFTs\"><\/span><strong>What are some examples of NFTs?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>NFTs come in all shapes and sizes, as demonstrated over the past few months of sales. And more forms are likely on the way as the community develops fresh uses for NFTs. <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Internet-Age_Art\"><\/span>Internet-Age Art<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.larvalabs.com\/cryptopunks\">CryptoPunks <\/a>was one of the earliest NFT projects and its art has risen in value as collector\u2019s items. <\/p>\n<p>The project included a total of 10,000 small pixel-art portraits of people, zombies, aliens, and apes.
