WarnerMedia\u2019s deal to merge with Discovery will create a single, formidable new streaming service to compete with Netflix and Disney+ \u2014 or then again, maybe it won\u2019t. <\/p>\n

Either way, the deal is expected to lead to savings for people who subscribe to both HBO Max and Discovery+, experts say. <\/p>\n

Currently, customers pay $15 a month for HBO Max and $10 a month for Discovery+. Experts believe that the company will charge less than the combined $25 fee in order to attract new customers to a portfolio of content that will range from HBO\u2019s \u201cGame<\/a> of Thrones\u201d and \u201cThe Nevers\u201d to Discovery\u2019s \u201c90-Day Fianc\u00e9\u201d and \u201cDiners, Drive-Ins and Dives.\u201d <\/p>\n

This will be true whether the company combines its content into one streaming service or not. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hope this is the beginning of consolidation of HBO Max and Discovery+ into one entity,\u201d said LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield. \u201cI think consumers would love not having to pay two bills.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the newly combined company could also choose to keep the two services separate and offer a bundled price \u2014 like Disney does with its streaming services Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu. <\/p>\n

The three distinct services are offered separately at different price points that start at $5.99 a month for Hulu and ESPN+ and $7.99 for Disney+. In order to attract more customers, the company offers all three services for the total price of $14 a month. <\/p>\n

The companies provided scant detail on Monday about what their new streaming service might actually look like. But Discovery chief executive David Zaslav told CNBC that he sees the combined entity attracting 400 million subscribers, or double Netflix\u2019s 208 million current global subscribers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe own the full ecosystem,\u201d Zaslav said.\u00a0\u201cNetflix is a great company,\u00a0Disney\u00a0is a great company, but we have a portfolio of content that is very diverse and broadly app<\/a>ealing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greenfield remains skeptical. The tie-up \u201cdoes not transform WarnerMedia into a Disney-like company,\u201d he said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t like you\u2019re merging all of NBCUniversal with WarnerMedia. This is adding the Discovery network channels onto WarnerMedia,\u201d he said, pointing to Discovery\u2019s reality-centric content from Food Network, TLC, HGTV and Animal Planet. <\/p>\n

Indeed, the bigger challenge for WarnerMedia and Discovery is transforming its massive TV businesses into a streaming titan, according to Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger. That\u2019s because most of the combined company\u2019s cash flow comes from affiliate fees and advertising, \u201cboth of which are directly subject to being cannibalized by the growth of streaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s \u201cironic\u201d here, according to Juenger, is that \u201cthis combination wouldn\u2019t result in a much bigger streaming business, it would result in a much bigger linear TV business.\u201d<\/p>\n

And when it comes to streaming, Zaslav\u2019s team has some catching up to do. Currently, Discovery+ has about 15 million paying customers, and HBO Max when combined with HBO have 44 million. Netflix, by comparison, currently has 208 million global subscribers, and Disney+ has more than 103 million global subscribers. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the merger won\u2019t close until mid-2022 . Once the deal does close, experts warn that the firm will have to enact $3 billion worth of cost cutting, as well as deal with the chaos involved in syncing two companies. In the meantime, rivals like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ will continue growing and pumping money into creating streaming content.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
