\n The World Health Organization said Friday that countries may have to lock down again as coronavirus cases continue to spike worldwide, with over 12 million now reported \u2014 more than double the amount reported six weeks ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all want to avoid whole countries going back into total lockdown, that is not a desire that anybody has,\u201d said Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO\u2019s Health Emergencies Program, at a press conference Friday, CBS News<\/a> reported. \u201cBut there may be situations in which that is the only option.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan called it the \u201cfundamental question\u201d facing every community and every nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce lockdowns were ended there was always the risk that the disease could bounce back,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The WHO \u2014 which President Trump took steps to withdraw from this week \u2014 has advised countries to open slowly, pay close attention to their data and proceed cautiously as they reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccept the fact that in our current situation it is very unlikely that we can eradicate or eliminate this virus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the virus is present there is a risk of spread,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general<\/a> of the WHO, said that several countries have also been brought back from severe outbreaks, including Italy, where more than 34,000 people died from the unchecked virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cAcross all walks of life we\u2019re all being tested to the limits,\u201d Tedros said. \u201cThe best shot we have is to work together in national unity and global solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The news came as confirmed cases in the US topped 3 million, more than any country in the world, and more than 133,000 Americans have been killed by the virus, also tops in the world.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anthony Fauci of the president\u2019s Coronavirus Task Force, said some US states such as Florida are seeing a surge in coronavirus cases because they didn\u2019t follow guidelines and prematurely reopened as the US reported 63,200 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, the Financial Times reported.<\/p>\n

The previous high was on Tuesday, when 60,000 cases were reported across the country, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n

Three of the hardest-hit states \u2014 California, Texas and Florida \u2014 just recorded their highest daily death tolls yet, the network reported.<\/p>\n

Trump has said that once states reopened, which he has been pushing for, there would be no return to lockdowns.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
