The company is offering high-fidelity music streaming for all Apple Music subscribers for free.<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone maker will offer lossless quality in three tiers.\u00a0CD-quality (16-bit depth\/44.1KHz sampling rate), 24-bit depth\/48KHz, 24-bit depth\/192KHz sampling rate.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: What\u2019s bit depth? And how does it impact music?]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an Apple fan, you\u2019d expect that its $550 headphones, the AirPods Max, will support hi-fi music streaming out of the box\u00a0\u2014 at least the CD-quality tier. But that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<p>Apple said that its expensive cans only support the AAC coded for streaming music when it\u2019s connected via Bluetooth to your iPhone. For the lossless tier, the company plans to use a proprietary\u00a0<span>ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) format to stream music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What about the time when you plug these headphones in? The company told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/17\/22440788\/apple-airpods-max-lossless-music-explainer-spatial-audio\">The Verge<\/a> that the AirPods Max\u2019s\u00a0<span>quality tops out at 24-bit\/48KHz, even when you use the Lightning connector-to-headphone-jack dongle on the iPhone. So, you can\u2019t enjoy the highest quality\u00a0lossless audio. So Dolby Atmos compatible tracks will sound more *atmospheric*, if you care about that sorta thing.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s expensive headphones were released last year.
