The Series:\u00a0<\/strong>Invincible<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThe<\/strong>\u00a0Pitch:<\/strong>\u00a0Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) is just like any 17-year-old kid: he deals with school bullies and school crushes, and he worships superheroes. Except that his father is actually one: the strongest superhero on Earth, Omni-Man\u00a0(J.K. Simmons). After years of waiting, Mark finally gets the powers he was supposed to inherit \u2014 super strength, power of flight, and super speed \u2014 and can begin his training to be a superhero with his dad. But after\u00a0Omni-Man is found near-death alongside the bodies of the Guardians of the Globe, Mark has to step up to become a superhero outside of his father\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Viewing:<\/strong> Let\u2019s face it: brutal, hyperviolent superhero re-imaginings are a dime a dozen. Comics have been doing it since the \u201980s, movies have been doing it since adapting those self-same comics from the \u201980s, and it\u2019s all the rage on TV now with notoriously bloody shows like\u00a0The Boys<\/em> and\u00a0Preacher<\/em>. Now\u00a0Invincible<\/em>, based on Robert Kirkman\u2019s comic book series of the same name, is here to fill the gap on the animation side.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll admit being a little skeptical of\u00a0Invincible\u00a0<\/em>going into it. Despite receiving plenty of critical praise when it first premiered, I\u2019ve been wary of any hyper-violent shows or movies that seem too \u201cedgelord\u201d to me: falling prey to being shocking for shock\u2019s sake. And while the gore comes as a surprise in\u00a0Invincible \u2014<\/em>\u00a0tacked on after the credits of the first episode \u2014 it\u2019s no more gruesome than what you\u2019ll find in many an adult animated show, or even an anime<\/a>. Rather, it\u2019s more interesting how it lays the groundwork for how\u00a0Invincible<\/em> grapp<\/a>les with the current superhero landscape.<\/p>\n

Set in a world where superheroes are increasingly common and privacy is a thing of the past,\u00a0Invincible<\/em> is balancing precariously on the edge of a totalitarian dystopia that many past subversive superhero titles have tackled before (think Watchmen<\/em>, The Boys<\/em>,\u00a0even the Crime Syndicate of the\u00a0Crisis on Infinite Earths<\/em>). But there\u2019s a thread of optimism running through the show, embodied by our titular hero. Awkward, insecure, and just the right amount of reckless, Mark Grayson is almost frustratingly naive when it comes to the horrors that we know are waiting for him around the corner.\u00a0It\u2019s like a cheery Peter Parker-type got thrown into the world of\u00a0Watchmen<\/em>.
\n\u201cThat\u2019s\u2026optimistic,\u201d every character says when he tells them his code name. Mark knows, but he\u2019s just likable enough that you hope that his idealistic vision of the world of superheroes stays as shiny and clean as it is at the beginning. It explains the\u00a0simple animation style, which feels inspired by the beloved superhero animated shows of the 2000s. Coupled with\u00a0the obvious riffs on familiar DC and Marvel heroes,\u00a0Invincible<\/em> is enjoyable as a surprisingly straightforward superhero coming-of-age story \u2014 until the shocks of blood and gore arrive. From then on, the show starts to have an intriguing dialogue with itself, between the optimistic roots of the superhero genre and the creeping nihilism of today\u2019s comic book flicks.<\/p>\n
