CAIRO, May 18 \u2013 Driven by pride in their language and heritage, a growing network of\u00a0volunteers\u00a0is helping expand\u00a0Arabic\u00a0language content on\u00a0Wikipedia, raising the number of articles above 1 million.<\/p>\n

Launched in 2003,\u00a0Arabic\u00a0Wikipedia\u00a0has seen growth accelerate in recent years, with the number of articles more than doubling since 2015 thanks to enthusiastic\u00a0volunteers\u00a0across the Arab world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are\u00a0volunteers\u00a0for the love of the\u00a0Arabic\u00a0language, for the love of our culture, for the love of our countries for the love of knowledge in general<\/a>,\u201d said Emna Mizouni, a contributor from Tunisia who also runs an association working on heritage.<\/p>\n

In 2020, more than 15,000 people made about 1.6 million edits to the online encyclopaedia\u2019s\u00a0Arabic\u00a0content, creating more than 77,000 new entries. Registered users grew by 44% to 136,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are helping each other to create more knowledge,\u201d said Jack Rabah, a regional manager at the Wikimedia<\/a> Foundation, which supports writers and editors with software, project funding and partnerships that help boost content.<\/p>\n

Arabic\u00a0was the 10th most-viewed language on\u00a0Wikipedia\u00a0for COVID-19 related content, though critics say the site lacks coverage of science<\/a> and technology<\/a> in\u00a0Arabic\u00a0\u2013 a lacuna some\u00a0volunteers\u00a0say they are working to remedy.<\/p>\n

Anass Sedrati, a 31-year-old Moroccan telecoms engineer working and studying in Sweden, spends nearly two hours daily writing new articles, translating and coordinating with other\u00a0volunteers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people who may not have had an opportunity, for example, to finish their schooling and to buy books,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can consider this as an attempt to provide knowledge to those who have not had the same opportunities as us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 1 million articles in\u00a0Arabic\u00a0are just a fraction of the nearly 55 million across different languages on\u00a0Wikipedia.\u00a0Volunteers\u00a0say there is room for more growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Arab world can write more, and we must have an article on everything that exists and on everything related to our life,\u201d said Sarmad Yaseen, a 40-year-old volunteer from Iraq who is also a telecoms engineer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an ancient civilization, we have writers, we have poets, we have creative people in all fields.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
