Actor Charles Grodin, whose comedic work graced TV, movies<\/a> and Broadway, has died of bone marrow cancer. He was 86. <\/p>\n

Grodin\u2019s son, Nicholas, confirmed the news to the New York Times<\/a>, saying he passed away in his home in Wilton, Connecticut. <\/p>\n

A master of deadpan, Pittsburgh native Grodin starred in movies such as \u201cThe Heartbreak Kid,\u201d \u201cMidnight Run\u201d and \u201cBeethoven,\u201d as well as in the Broadway show \u201cSame Time, Next Year.\u201d Throughout the \u201990s, he was a familiar face on \u201cThe Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson\u201d and \u201cLate Show With David Letterman.\u201d <\/p>\n

Though he never won an Emmy for those performances, he did nab one for his writing: In 1978, he won the Outstanding Writing <\/a>award for his work on \u201cThe Paul Simon Special,\u201d a comedy event that aired on NBC.<\/p>\n

Grodin landed on the acting scene in 1962 with the Broadway comedy \u201cTchin-Tchin,\u201d followed by a role in \u201cAbsence of a Cello\u201d in 1964. Then, it was onto Hollywood: After a small role in 1968\u2019s \u201cRosemary\u2019s Baby,\u201d he became a household name for his wry comedic work in director Mike Nichols\u2019 \u201cCatch-22\u201d in 1970, followed by Elaine May\u2019s \u201cThe Heartbreak Kid\u201d opposite Cybill Shepherd in 1972, 1978\u2019s \u201cHeaven Can Wait\u201d with Warren Beatty and 1980\u2019s \u201cSeems Like Old Times\u201d with Goldie Hawn.<\/p>\n

In between film app<\/a>earances, Grodin returned to Broadway for a breakthrough leading man role in 1975\u2019s \u201cSame Time, Next Year,\u201d opposite Ellen Burstyn.<\/p>\n

Throughout the course of his six-decade career, Grodin moved stealthily between the absurd (1976\u2019s \u201cKing Kong\u201d remake with Jessica Lange) to the cult-classic sublime (1988\u2019s \u201cMidnight Run,\u201d an anti-buddy-comedy with Robert De Niro) <\/p>\n

However, in 1992, he played one of his best-known roles: The patriarch in the family pooch comedy \u201cBeethoven\u201d as well as the sequel a year later. <\/p>\n

In 2010, Grodin \u2014 who also\u00a0was a political commentator and had a CNBC talk show in the late \u201990s \u2014 sent a letter to a federal judge regarding the sentencing of former New York State Senate leader Joseph Bruno, who was convicted on two fraud counts. He pushed for clemency for the politico, who himself reportedly was helpful in getting clemency for four inmates in the mid-1990s.<\/p>\n

In 2013, the veteran actor spoke to The Post about one of his last high-profile acting roles, playing the father of the star of \u201cThe Michael J. Fox Show\u201d on NBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most striking part is that I had never met Michael J. Fox until now,\u201d Grodin told The Post. \u201cI was certainly aware of him, and he\u2019s really quite inspiring. These are very long days [shooting the show] \u2014 and I\u2019m healthy, it seems to me \u2014 and then I look at this guy and it\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best moment was at the end of our 14-hour day,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we said goodbye, I said to Michael, \u2018The next time we\u2019re in a scene together, give me a couple of takes without doing the Parkinson\u2019s thing,\u2019 and the fact that he laughed \u2014 I took a chance with that \u2014 is quite something.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stars including comedians Patton Oswalt, Marc Maron and Billy Eichner quickly took to Twitter<\/a> to pay homage to the performer and writer they considered a legend.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod I loved him,\u201d Eichner tweeted.<\/a><\/p>\n
