It\u2019s been a tough year for Hillsong megachurch, but its founder believes that the next time scandal strikes, they\u2019ll at least \u201chopefully\u201d be better prepared.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of things I should\u2019ve known earlier, and hopefully, moving forward, we\u2019ll make sure we have far better systems in place and better accountability,\u201d Brian Houston, who co-founded the church with his wife in 1983, told NBC News\u2019 \u201cToday\u201d<\/a> in his first interview reflecting on the Australia-based institution\u2019s rocky last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After Carl Lentz \u2014Justin Bieber\u2019s ex-pastor pal and the former head of Hillsong\u2019s NY branch \u2014 was fired for cheating on his wife in November, a tidal wave of allegations emerged against the multinational house of God.<\/p>\n

Houston, 67, now admits that despite the turmoil Lentz\u2019s impropriety caused for Hillsong, he still misses the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarl was Carl. He\u2019s a unique character. There\u2019s a lot of things I miss about Carl,\u201d Houston said in a clip of the interview, which is set to air in full on Wednesday morning. \u201cBut having said that, there were leadership issues that I believe included lying, included what I would call narcissistic behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the public only became aware of problems with Lentz\u2019s leadership in November, Houston added that he\u2019d been worried for years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had concerns and many conversations over the years with Carl,\u201d he said, adding that he was bothered \u201cto a degree, for sure\u201d that many people described Lentz as aloof and removed from the actual ministry.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
