The Season 6 finale of BBC police corruption drama \u201cLine of Duty\u201d snared over 15 million viewers \u2014 the century\u2019s most-watched UK drama episode.<\/p>\n

Season 6 is now available on streaming service BritBox, with familiar faces Martin Compston (DS Steve Arnott), Vicky McClure (DI Kate Fleming) and Adrian Dunbar (Superintendent Ted Hastings) returning to investigate a murder case with sinister and far-reaching implications. <\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things we do with \u2018Line of Duty\u2019 is to reward our loyal fans who are familiar with previous seasons, but it\u2019s really important that we make the show totally acceptable to new fans,\u201d series creator\/writer Jed Mercurio told The Post. \u201cSo every season starts with a new character never portrayed in the show before\u2026and, in Season 6, it\u2019s Kelly Macdonald playing a lead homicide detective [DCI Joanne Davidson] investigating the murder of a journalist, Gail Vella. When the season starts this homicide inquiry is about a year old and they still haven\u2019t identified a prime suspect.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe come into our story when there\u2019s a breakthrough in the case, which brings the anti-corruption department into the story because there are suspicious circumstances around the arrest of the suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and as the seven-episode season unravels Joanne Davidson falls under suspicion in connection to Vella\u2019s murder \u2014 while doubts are raised about members of the anti-corruption unit, including Superintendent Hastings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn developing the series it was originally important that internal affairs officers weren\u2019t holier-than-thou,\u201d Mercurio said. \u201cI wanted to make the cops under investigation for being allegedly corrupt operate in a kind of moral grey area, so the audience could have sympathy for them and we could divide the loyalties of the audience and also create mystery around the cops under investigation. They may not be guilty of what they\u2019re being investigated for\u2026there may be another explanation and they\u2019re actually good cops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether one of these anti-corruption officers is going to end up being revealed as having committed corruption themselves \u2014 or whether they take immoral or unethical steps in their professional lives that will come back to haunt them \u2014 are all very important to the identity of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mercurio writes each \u201cLine of Duty\u201d episode himself, as he did with his other BBC ratings behemoth, \u201cBodyguard,\u201d which starred Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden and streamed on Netflix in the US. It\u2019s no easy task, considering each episode is about an hour long, with no commercial interruptions, and the series takes a very deep dive into each of its season-long cases, with references to past characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have the main points of the season, the main twists and turns of the story, the main character development and dramatic concerns, mapp<\/a>ed out in advance,\u201d Mercurio said. \u201cThe way the show is written, episode-by-episode, it can be a journey of discovery. It may become apparent that some our plans won\u2019t work out and may need revising to the point of taking a step back and adjusting the overall plan for the whole season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mercurio attributes the enduring popularity of \u201cLine of Duty\u201d to one central conceit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe essential difference is that it\u2019s cops versus cops. We\u2019re the only police drama series that deals with corruption, which is an intrinsic part of our storytelling,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the reasons we didn\u2019t have a smooth journey to getting on the air [at the start] was that the vast majority of cop shows are what you might call \u2018propaganda,\u2019 the drama of reassurance about policing. There were misgivings by the network executives that the audience wouldn\u2019t welcome a show that asked questions about police misconduct and violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what we\u2019ve shown, season after season, is that the audience will buy into that and make some of it chime with their concerns about the way our institutions are set up\u2026and whether they engage in misconduct or elements of corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other shows aren\u2019t asking those questions,\u201d he said, \u201cand maybe it makes [our fans] watch \u2018Line of Duty\u2019 in a different way.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
