Tesla may be misleading consumers by advertising its vehicles as \u201cself-driving,\u201d according to California authorities.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s Department of Motor Vehicles is reviewing whether the Elon Musk-owned electric automaker is violating a law that prohibits advertising vehicles as autonomous unless the vehicle meets strict regulatory criteria.<\/p>\n

A DMV spokesperson told The Post on Tuesday that the agency \u201chas the matter under review.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

All Teslas since 2020 have come with \u201cself-driving\u201d computers, but owners must pay an extra $10,000 to unlock the feature,\u00a0according\u00a0to Car and Driver<\/a>. The self-driving feature allows cars to change lanes, exit highways and stop at traffic lights, but drivers are required to remain alert and awake at the wheel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to California\u00a0law, \u201cautonomous technology<\/a>\u201d must allow vehicles to move without \u201cthe active physical control or monitoring by a human operator.\u201d Car manufacturers and salespeople are\u00a0forbidden\u00a0from advertising vehicles<\/a> for sale or lease that do not meet this definition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If California authorities find that Tesla violated California law, the agency could potentially revoke the company\u2019s permits and licenses, which could lead to Teslas being removed from public roads, according to the DMV spokesperson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tesla did not immedia<\/a>tely reply to a request for comment on the review, which was first\u00a0reported\u00a0by the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Tesla has found itself in hot water over its autonomous driving claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In July 2020 a German court\u00a0banned\u00a0Tesla from using the phrases \u201cfull potential for autonomous driving\u201d and \u201cautopilot inclusive\u201d in advertising in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
