Bitcoin hasn\u2019t traded below the $40,000 level since early February. Ether<br \/>\n        ETHUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573964\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-14.48%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0dropped 13% to $2,975, a level not touched since early May, just before the cryptocurrency soared to a record high above $4,000. target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/markets\/currencies\/bitcoin-stumbles-after-china-crypto-warning-20210519-p57t4v?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nc&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1621386050\" class=\"icon none\">media reports<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLate yesterday in Asia, the PBOC issued a warning about a rebound in speculation in virtual currencies. China announced that financial and payment institutions are banned from pricing or conducting business in virtual currencies. The story did not get much traction overnight but seems to be picking up steam this morning,\u201d said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst at OANDA, in a note to clients. <\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Bank of China also reportedly said virtual currencies can\u2019t be used as a form of payment because they aren\u2019t real currencies.  Financial institutions in China cannot facilitate bitcoin transactions, and exchange and platforms were banned in 2017 amid a crackdown.
