Comedia<\/a>n, actor, and writer Paul Mooney has died from a heart attack, according to journalist Roland Martin<\/a> and the Daily News<\/em><\/a>. He died early this morning (May 19) at his Oakland home, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>. He was 79 years old.<\/p>\n

Paul Mooney was born in 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He relocated to Oakland with his mother when he was a child, and later began working as a circus ringmaster. After seeing Lenny Bruce perform, Mooney moved to Los Angeles and began working on his stand-up career. He met Richard Pryor in the late 1960s, with the two beginning to work together shortly thereafter. Pryor requested that NBC hire Mooney to write the episode of Saturday Night Live<\/em> he hosted in 1975. Mooney ended up contributing one of the show\u2019s most famous sketches<\/a>, wherein Pryor attends a job interview conducted by Chevy Chase.<\/p>\n

Mooney become the head writer of the short-lived NBC series<\/a> The Richard Pryor Show<\/em> in 1977. He also also co-wrote several of Pryor\u2019s stand-up specials, including Is It Something I Said<\/em> (1975), Bicentennial N—-r<\/em> (1976), and Live on the Sunset Strip<\/a><\/em> (1982).<\/p>\n

Beyond his work with Pryor, Mooney wrote for Sanford and Son<\/em> and Good Times<\/em>, and served as the head writer for In Living Color<\/em>\u2019s first season. He also performed his own stand-up comedy, releasing specials like 1993\u2019s Race<\/em> and 2010\u2019s It\u2019s the End of the World<\/em>. Mooney acted in several films, too, including 1978\u2019s The Buddy Holly Story<\/em>, 1981\u2019s Bustin\u2019 Loose<\/em>, 1994\u2019s In the Army Now<\/em>, 2000\u2019s Bamboozled<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mooney never achieved the major success of his peers and attributed it to the fact that he tackled race, politics, and other hot button subjects with an unflinching eye. \u201cHollywood likes you a certain way when you\u2019re Black,\u201d he once said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the 1980s, Mooney worked alongside comics like Eddie Murphy, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Arsenio Hall, and filmmaker Robert Townsend in a group colloquially referred to as \u201cThe Black Pack.\u201d Later on, when he began writing on Chapp<\/a>elle\u2019s Show<\/em>, Dave Chappelle gave the comedian what Vulture<\/a> referred to as \u201ca wide berth.\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t fuck with Paul Mooney. You don\u2019t fuck with his writing, his material, his sketches\u2026 and you certainly don\u2019t tell him what to do!\u201d Chappelle said. \u201cTrust me, I\u2019ve learned.\u201d<\/p>\n
