Paul Mooney, the actor-comedian famous for his roles in \u201cThe Buddy Holly Story\u201d and \u201cBamboozled,\u201d has died at 79. <\/p>\n

Mooney passed away Wednesday morning in Oakland, California, his daughter confirmed<\/a> on Twitter. The cause of death was a heart attack, according to reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me a moment,\u201d Spring Mooney said in the emotional tweet. \u201cMy best friend just died and my world is forever SHOOK !!! I really can\u2019t put into words right now my feelings .. know that I LOVE THIS MAN AND I AM BROKEN.\u201d <\/p>\n

Mooney was best known for starring opposite Oscar nominee Gary Busey in 1978\u2019s \u201cThe Buddy Holly Story\u201d as Sam Cooke. He also played Junebug in Spike Lee\u2019s acclaimed 2000 comedy \u201cBamboozled.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Shreveport, Louisiana, native got his start as a writer, backing legendary standup comedian Richard Pryor. He went on to write for Fox\u2019s \u201cIn Living Color.\u201d <\/p>\n

In 2004, Mooney landed a high-profile role \u2014 playing \u201cNegrodamus\u201d \u2014 in a couple of skits on close friend and comic Dave Chapp<\/a>elle\u2019s smash hit \u201cChappelle\u2019s Show.\u201d <\/p>\n

In 2006, Mooney told The Post that his\u00a0controversial BFF has an \u201cinnocence\u201d and \u201clittle boy quality\u201d that he admired, adding that he was worried about the future of stand-up comedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need people who are talented, creative and speak the truth,\u201d Mooney said of Chappelle. \u201cIt\u2019s a dying breed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mooney\u2019s rep did not return The Post\u2019s request for comment. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday following news<\/a> of his passing, fans shared their condolences for the influential comedian. <\/p>\n

Director and producer Robert Townsend, who cast Mooney in the 1987 flick \u201cHollywood Shuffle,\u201d saluted the comic for his outspokenness in a 2016 Vulture interview<\/a>. \u201cPaul didn\u2019t care to be loved. He wanted to speak his mind,\u201d he said. \u201cHe taught a generation of comedians to be fearless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, fellow comedian Sandra Bernhard shared the story<\/a> of how Mooney discovered her, launching her career in the business. <\/p>\n
