Even his wife\u00a0<strong>Kristen Bell<\/strong> and his podcast co-host\u00a0<strong>Monica Padman<\/strong> were fooled to an extent. He was doing hour-plus episodes of\u00a0<em>Armchair Expert<\/em> on pills and getting away with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Prince Harry Opens Up To Dax On\u00a0<em>Armchair Expert<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But in 2004, at the height of his addiction before getting clean, Dax slipped up BAD \u2014 and it was right in plain sight.<\/p>\n<p>He reveals to host <strong>Blake Griffin<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cProfessionally, the only wreckage I really had while I was an addict was I went on Conan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This was back in <strong>Conan O\u2019Brien<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<em>Late Night<\/em> days, so the audience was used to a degree of silliness. But this was something else. Dax reveals:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI had done the pre-interview in a blackout, and I woke up to the hotel security shaking me awake, and I was with a stranger, and the stranger had peed the bed, or I had peed the bed \u2014 someone had peed the bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hotel security, he explains, showed up because his publicist was flipping out; he was supposed to be on the show in 20 minutes, but he was still passed out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Video: Most Awkward Celebrity Interviews Of All Time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Somehow he got ready and made it to the soundstage, but he was a wreck:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI show up on the show. I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about. I can tell he\u2019s queuing me up for stories I\u2019ve told, but I don\u2019t know any of the stories. So, I\u2019m just doing what I can to be funny out there, and I am a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t seen it, it\u2019s a pretty classic late night <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance. Dax opens the interview\u00a0taking a prat fall over the couch, demolishing the coffee table.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conan O&#039;Brien &#039;Dax Shepard 8\/11\/04\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bRwj7TiZw4I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a little scattered but still very funny, so everyone watching just thought, hey he\u2019s on\u00a0<strong>MTV<\/strong>, maybe he\u2019s going full\u00a0<em>Jackass<\/em> or something. He remembers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow, the audience dug it. It was fine for the audience. But for him, what a disaster. I didn\u2019t know any of the stories. I broke a coffee table.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Viewers may have laughed, but what was happening behind the scenes wasn\u2019t a joke. Conan and his producers had a better idea what was really going on, and they banned him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo I was banned from that show for some years, until I got sober and I got myself back on it and now I\u2019ve been on it a bazillion times, but that was probably the only career wreckage-y thing I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Innerestingly, on a 2018 episode of his own podcast, Dax previously asked Conan about the appearance from\u00a0<em>his<\/em> point of view.
