Credit: SPECIFIC, Swansea University<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Scientists at SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre, Swansea University, have found a way to replace the toxic, unsustainable solvents currently needed to make the next generation of solar technology.<\/p>\n<p>                                                                                Printed carbon perovskite solar cells have been described as a likely front runner to the market because they are extremely efficient at converting light to electricity, cheap and easy to make.<\/p>\n<p>A major barrier to the large-scale manufacture and commercialization of these cells is the solvents used to control crystallization of the perovskite during fabrication: This is because they are made from unsustainable materials and are banned in many countries due to their toxicity and psychoactive effects.<\/p>\n<p>SPECIFIC&#8217;s researchers have discovered that a non-toxic biodegradable solvent called \u03b3-Valerolactone (GVL) could replace these solvents without impacting cell performance.<\/p>\n<p>GVL&#8217;s list of advantages could improve the commercial viability of carbon perovskite solar devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is made from sustainable feedstocks<\/li>\n<li>There are no legal issues in its use around the world<\/li>\n<li>It is suitable for use in large-scale manufacturing processes <\/li>\n<li>It is non-toxic and biodegradable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carys Worsley, who led the research as part of her doctorate, said:<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2021\/a-safer-greener-way-to-1.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2021\/a-safer-greener-way-to-1.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Left - solvent normally used to make solar cells, which is toxic. As the next generation of solar technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches commercial viability, research to reduce the environmental impact of large-scale production will become increasingly important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Trystan Watson, research group leader, added:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many problems need to be resolved before these technologies become a commercial reality.
