The Issue: St. John\u2019s University\u2019s firing of a professor for using the N-word while quoting Mark Twain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As if last year\u2019s firing of adjunct professor Richard Taylor were not egregious enough, St. John\u2019s University had to out-woke even itself and spinelessly cave to grievance-addled whiners (\u201cTwain Wreck,\u201d May 16).<\/p>\n

As The Post reported, a veteran adjunct English professor had the temerity to quote verbatim from a satirical novel by Mark Twain.<\/p>\n

For this \u201coffense,\u201d Professor Hannah Berliner Fischthal will no longer be teaching.<\/p>\n

Recently, I wrote to St. John\u2019s President Rev. Brian Shanley, expressing my disgust at an institution that would cave to, coddle and indulge the woke police. I returned my diploma requesting that, as a graduate, I be \u201ccanceled.\u201d No longer do I wish my name associated with SJU.<\/p>\n

Should any fellow alumni feel as I do, the time has come to flood Shanley\u2019s office with letters of displeasure and perhaps some returned diplomas of a once-proud and outstanding university. <\/p>\n

As an alumnus of St. John\u2019s University, I am disgusted by the firing of an adjunct professor because she offended a student by simply reading a passage from one of America\u2019s greatest writers and humorists.<\/p>\n

Mark my words, I will not donate a single shilling to my alma mater, regardless of the numerous requests I receive for donations. <\/p>\n

This new America doesn\u2019t seem as smart or as app<\/a>reciative of our literary life as the America we had.<\/p>\n

A student was offended by a discussion that merged history, culture, regionalism, great writing, race and the complexities of all those ideas.<\/p>\n

Add that the daughter of Holocaust survivors was guiding this educational journey and some student, schooled in self-absorbed stupidity, can\u2019t take it? It\u2019s another defeat for reason and a victory for oppression.<\/p>\n

As an alumni of St. John\u2019s and proud \u201cRedmen\u201d baseball player, I am very ashamed that SJU has become so politically correct that it had to fire Fischthal for using the N-word once while teaching the word\u2019s history and context, quoting Mark Twain.<\/p>\n

It started with changing the school\u2019s mascot name from \u201cRedmen\u201d to \u201cRed Storm\u201d and has down-spiraled ever since.<\/p>\n

Now this 20-year professor is fired because one student e-mailed a complaint. Such a complaint should not be the basis of investigation and firing.<\/p>\n

Is Shanley brave enough to stand up for his staff and stop allowing students to run the university?<\/p>\n

Wake up, SJU alums: Stop donating until these so-called intellectual scholars use common sense. <\/p>\n

I have always been extremely proud of my alma mater and of my SJU degree.<\/p>\n

After the recent firing of Fischthal, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, on the heels of the firing of Taylor, it is clear that the university has completely caved to cancel culture.<\/p>\n

In light of this, and the school\u2019s sharp left-turn, I am no longer a proud alumnus of SJU. In fact, I am embarrassed to be associated with a school in any way.<\/p>\n

Many years have passed since my graduation from St John\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Although not a great contributor, I have consistently emotionally and financially supported St. John\u2019s.<\/p>\n

After reading of the firing of Professor Fischthal, for the unforgivable sin of quoting from literature, I will no longer continue my support.<\/p>\n

A Catholic university that would fire a teacher for quoting Mark Twain\u2019s writings shows no empathy about causing loss of income and respect for one of their own, who has served them for 20 years.<\/p>\n

I would have expected more from my beloved alma mater, which espouses Christian values. I would urge others to demand reinstatement as a requirement for further financial support.<\/p>\n
