“#House Intel Republicans blame Chinese lab leak for COVID spread<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee say there is \u201csignificant circumstantial evidence\u201d that the coronavirus originated from a leak at China\u2019s Wuhan Institute of Virology, and that the US government \u201cmay have funded or collaborated\u201d in the research that led to it.<\/p>\n

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the ranking member of the panel, and other Republicans on the committee released the report obtained by Fox News<\/a>, which concluded that it is essential for health experts and government officials to understand how the deadly virus originated to prevent \u201cor quickly mitigate future pandemics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInternational efforts to discover the true source of the virus, however, have been stymied by a lack of cooperation from the People\u2019s Republic of China,\u201d \u200bthey\u00a0wrote\u200b in the report\u200b. <\/p>\n

\u201cNevertheless, significant circumstantial evidence raises serious concerns that the COVID-19 outbreak may have been a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

They said China has a \u201chistory of research labs leaks resulting in infections,\u201d citing warnings from US diplomats in China as early as 2017.<\/p>\n

The report went on to say that the lab in Wuhan had been conducting \u201cdangerous research\u201d on co\u200bronaviruses without following \u201cnecessary safety protocols,\u201d which risked an accidental outbreak.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

The GOP lawmakers noted in the report that \u201cseveral researchers in the Wuhan lab were sickened with COVID-19-like symptoms\u201d in the fall of 2019.<\/p>\n

It also said Chinese\u2019s military had \u201cinvolvement\u201d in the lab.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cBy contrast, little circumstantial evidence has emerged to support the PRC\u2019s claim that COVID-19 was a natural occurrence, having jumped from some other species to human,\u201d \u200bthe Republicans wrote in the report, using the acronym for the People\u2019s Republic of China.<\/p>\n

They went on to say\u00a0Chinese authorities \u201chave failed to identify the original species that allegedly spread the virus to humans, which is critical to their zoonotic transfer theory.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even more, the report claims \u201cclear signs\u201d exist that US government agencies and academic institutions\u00a0\u201cmay have funded or collaborated in Gain of Function research\u201d at the Wuhan \u200bl\u200bab\u200b.<\/p>\n

It went on to claim the \u200bresearch \u201cwas published even after the U.S. government had paused these kinds of studies in the United States due to ethical concerns over their biowarfare app<\/a>licability and their potential to accidentally unleash a pandemic.\u200b\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cTo protect American citizens from future pandemics, the U.S. Government must place more pressure on China to allow full, credible investigations of the source of the COVID-19 pandemic and to allow probes of the likelihood that it resulted from a lab leak,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. Government must also provide a full accounting of any American cooperation with the Wuhan lab\u2019s coronavirus research, including the support of these projects through U.S. Government funds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nunes and other Republican members of the panel released the report and a letter to President Biden and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, blaming them for not being\u00a0\u201cforthcoming\u201d about \u201cwhat processes it undertook to make seemingly authoritative statements early in the pandemic about the origins of the virus \u2014 conclusions that are now in question.\u201d<\/p>\n

T\u200bhe Republicans want the intelligence community to release all the data it has on the coronavirus\u2019s origins, including any reports on a possible \u201ccollaboration\u201d between the Wuhan lab and the Chinese military.<\/p>\n

They set a May 31 deadline for a response.\u00a0
