When they were announced at the end of last year, I was broadly sceptical. Yes, I thought they\u2019d be good, but in no way would be worth their $550 price tag.<\/p>\n<p>As some nobody with a guitar once said though, \u201ctimes are a-changin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While I still wouldn\u2019t put the AirPods Max on the top of my over-ear Bluetooth headphone tree (currently, that award would go to Sennheiser\u2019s Momentum 3), I\u2019ve really begun to adore Apple\u2019s cans.<\/p>\n<p>But this could change in the headphones\u2019 next generation. Because although I love them,\u00a0the AirPods Max have flaws. Lots and lots of flaws.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s consider one of these that arose last week. Apple announced\u00a0a lossless version of Apple Music. Basically, this will offer users of the service the highest quality of digital music. You can read about what that means here.<\/p>\n<p>The issue? None of Apple\u2019s headphones \u2014 including the AirPods Max \u2014\u00a0are capable of playing lossless audio. In other words, a service Apple is offering cannot be used by its own products.<\/p>\n<p>All this got me thinking more broadly about the AirPods Max in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> and how Apple could iron out the current issues in the next generation. Effectively, how it can take them from good to excellent. You\u2019re welcome, Mr. Tim Apple.<\/p>\n<p>First though\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_good_about_the_AirPods_Max\"><\/span>What\u2019s good about the AirPods Max?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before we get into the specifics about what to improve, it\u2019s useful to spend a little bit of time on why I\u2019ve been so impressed with the AirPods Max in general.<\/p>\n<p>First up, of course, is the integration in the Apple ecosystem. It\u2019s easy to forget just how seamlessly you can switch AirPods between different devices until you try and do the same thing outside of Apple\u2019s bubble.<\/p>\n<p>Next is the build quality of the AirPods Max. Honestly, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve ever come across a pair of headphones that appear so solid and well-made. While I think this feature can be improved (more on that later), the way it blocks sound is astounding. It\u2019s genuinely eerie. My partner hates me wearing them around the house because I can\u2019t hear\u00a0<em>anything<\/em>: talking, the doorbell, dogs barking, or alarms. You name it, with the AirPods Max on, I can\u2019t hear it.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the real meat: sound. I\u2019ll run our superlatives to describe the AirPods Max. These are headphones tuned for maximum enjoyment. Everything is crisp, lush, and rich. The sound is spacious and the presentation is excellent. They\u2019re a really wonderful pair of cans.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are other things I like about the AirPods Max (the ear cups, the Apple Watch-style, the fit, the lack of touch controls\u2026 it goes on and on), but that\u2019s not the point of this piece.<\/p>\n<p>We should do what we came here for: to talk about how Apple can improve its most expensive headphones. Because as good as they are, I\u2019m still not convinced they\u2019re worth it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_AirPods_Max_need_a_new_case\"><\/span>The AirPods Max need a new case<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When the AirPods Max were released, I im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely wrote about how fucking stupid the case is. All the \u201cbra-strap\u201d jokes fell a bit flat \u2014 it\u2019s a headphone case, who gives a shit?<\/p>\n<p>No, the issue is all about function. As in, this case is useless when it comes to being, well, a case. Because it doesn\u2019t cover the AirPods Max themselves, I simply don\u2019t take them anywhere that I might need to put them in my bag.<\/p>\n<p>A solo walk or a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to the shop? I\u2019ll put them on. But if I\u2019m going to meet a friend? They stay at home. If you spend this much on headphones, you expect to be able to take them anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the only option is to get a third-party bit of kit, many of which are literally a case for your AirPods Max case. Yep, read that again. A sentence that is so absurd I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve written it. Again.<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, I\u2019m still half-expecting Apple to release the AirPods Max Magic Protect Case, something that\u2019ll retail for a cool $79.99.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Replace_the_lightning_cable_with_USB-C\"><\/span>Replace the lightning cable with USB-C<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It appears a matter of when, not if, Apple will shift its hardware from its proprietary Lightning connector to USB-C. In fact, it\u2019s already happened with the iPad Pro and Air range.<\/p>\n<p>Look, I sorta get the logic on why the AirPods Max have a Lightning port. It\u2019s likely you\u2019ll be using the headphones most with your iPhone, meaning you only have to carry a single charging cable around. But\u2026 how about you change the iPhone to USB-C too, Apple?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d expect a pair of AirPods Max to last for at least five years. Yep, to use your $550 headphones with a wire, you need to shell out another $35. Just fucking include a headphone cable, Tim.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_introduce_proper_lossless_support_for_the_AirPods_Max\"><\/span>And introduce proper lossless support for the AirPods Max<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is the point that kicked off this piece. Even if you\u2019re using an audio cable, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/17\/22440788\/apple-airpods-max-lossless-music-explainer-spatial-audio\">highest resolution you can achieve<\/a> with the AirPods Max is\u00a024-bit\/48 kHz (more on what that means here).<\/p>\n<p>To get there though, the digital audio from your phone is converted to analog before being\u00a0<em>reconverted<\/em> to digital in the AirPods Max. Effectively, the original lossless file is being altered along the way to your headphones. Bluetooth has technical limitations on bandwidth \u2014 effectively it can\u2019t reliably stream files the size of lossless digital music.<\/p>\n<p>But there are other options. For example, it\u2019d be amazing if Apple could weave some magic so you could AirPlay audio\u00a0(a service that does allow lossless playback) to the AirPods Max.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Better_battery_life\"><\/span>Better battery life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The AirPods Max don\u2019t have a terrible battery life, but it\u2019d be useful if the next generation of the headphones lasted closer to 30 hours, rather than the current 20.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cheaper_battery_replacements\"><\/span>Cheaper battery replacements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Again, not rocket <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>. Who doesn\u2019t want stuff cheaper?<\/p>\n<p>Currently, it costs\u00a0$79 to replace the AirPods Max battery. A scheme where this was cheaper if the replacement happened in, say, the first three years of ownership would be grand.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this\u2019ll never happen. The company makes more money long term by enticing people into its ecosystem. But a proper Android app would be nice, wouldn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Control_over_the_AirPods_Maxs_noise-canceling\"><\/span>Control over the AirPods Max\u2019s noise-canceling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the beginning of this piece, I brought up the noise-canceling capabilities of the AirPods Max. While this is a great feature, sometimes I feel a slight discomfort because the effect is so strong.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019d be fantastic if there was a way to change the intensity of the noise-canceling so I can find that sweet spot depending on my environment. In fact, this could be rolled out via a software update, rather than in the next generation of the AirPods Max.<\/p>\n<p><em>Phew<\/em>. Well, there you go, Apple. A whole load of ideas about how to make the next version of the AirPods Max even better.
