Andrew Yang says he\u2019s the mayoral candidate to lead the NYPD \u201cinto the 21st century,\u201d but he couldn\u2019t answer basic questions about the department\u2019s two most important reforms over the past year. <\/p>\n

Asked at a campaign event in Brooklyn on Thursday if he agreed with the repeal of 50a \u2014 the state law that shielded police disciplinary records from the public until it was overturned last June \u2014 Yang couldn\u2019t answer the question on his own. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe repeal of 50a \u2026,\u201d he said, pausing. <\/p>\n

When pressed by a Post reporter if he knew what 50a was, Yang responded, \u201cIt\u2019s not the mandatory interview of the \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, Edwin Raymond, an NYPD cop supporter of Yang who\u2019s on leave from the force to run for City Council, whispered in the candidate\u2019s ear, \u201cThe disciplinary records.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe disciplinary records of officers not being released,\u201d Yang parroted. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think we should get more transparency,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Police unions objected to the new law, arguing that it endangered officers by making personal information public. <\/p>\n

Yang was also fuzzy on the controversial diaphragm bill that became law last summer in the wake of police reforms passed after George Floyd\u2019s death. <\/p>\n

In addition to criminalizing chokeholds, the bill includes a prohibition on other restraints of a person\u2019s diaphragm or ability to breathe such as sitting, kneeling or standing on someone\u2019s chest or back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to hear from Edwin what his experiences are,\u201d Yang said, nodding to the former cop at his side, when asked if he believes the law should be changed. <\/p>\n

Pushed by reporters to give his own answer, Yang said, \u201cWhen I talked to police officers, they were concerned about it but they felt their practices have adapted. They feel they are still able to arrest someone without violating the rules.\u201d <\/p>\n

Raymond interjected that the language needs to be tightened to allow cops to touch a suspect\u2019s torso but not his windpipe, adding, \u201cthere can be some tightening in the ambiguity\u201d about which body parts a police officer is able to restrain.<\/p>\n

Yang then changed his response, saying he\u2019d spoken to some council members who were \u201cconcerned about the ambiguity\u201d in the law.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
