Gadfly: Lab-Leak Theory No Longer \u2018Fake News\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suddenly, \u201cit\u2019s okay to speculate about a lab leak\u201d in China as the source of COVID-19, snarks National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty<\/a>. Ex-New York Times science<\/a> writer Donald McNeil Jr., 18 scientists in a letter to Science magazine and even The Washington Post editorial board have now all backed the possibility that the coronavirus escaped from a Wuhan lab. There is still no \u201cdefinitive case,\u201d but \u201ccircumstantial evidence\u201d has been \u201cpiling up.\u201d What are the odds, after all, \u201cthat a novel coronavirus\u201d from bats would \u201cspontaneously and independently cause an outbreak in the middle of a city that housed not one, but two laboratories researching novel coronaviruses\u201d from bats?<\/p>\n

Conservative: Enough \u2018War on COVID\u2019 Noise<\/strong><\/p>\n

US leaders framed the pandemic as a \u201cwar against an invisible enemy,\u201d recalls Matthew Schmitz at The American Conservative<\/a>, and soon, \u201cwartime spirit spread.\u201d Yet that led to hubris and lockstep thinking like that in the immediate post-9\/11 years \u2014 when \u201cgrand schemes were overwhelmed by unintended consequences. Americans felt a spirit of national solidarity, but the seemingly endless wars on which we embarked only deepened our social<\/a> divides.\u201d Likewise, \u201cour latest war, another project of our bipartisan leadership class,\u201d has led to draconian restrictions on the rights to worship and freely associate and mindless acceptance of symbolic conformity, with masks replacing flag pins, even as lockdowns \u201cempowered the rich, squeezed the middle and left more Americans dependent on public support.\u201d Even if the COVID battle \u201cdoes not become another endless war, it will have left our country less united, less safe and less free.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: The Media\u2019s Meltdown<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican media is a disaster,\u201d declares Jesse Singal at Spectator USA<\/a>, with \u201ca heightened sense among many mainstream journalists\u201d that they aren\u2019t just \u201cobservers, but active participants in vital social-justice battles.\u201d The \u201cfight over where the line between journalism and activism should lie \u2014 or if there should be one at all \u2014 has sparked .\u2009.\u2009. high-profile internal meltdowns at elite journalistic institutions.\u201d The New York Times alone has seen multiple ousters; Editorial Page Editor James Bennet left after running a piece by Republican Sen. Tom Cotton that led some staffers to argue, as Singal puts it, that \u201cmerely printing a column expressing a commonly held belief causes danger to one\u2019s colleagues.\u201d The loons are a \u201ctiny fraction of the paper\u2019s\u201d employees, but this \u201cvery passionate vanguard\u201d has exerted \u201ca surprising amount of influence\u201d by claiming anyone who disagrees is \u201can enemy of justice itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the Right: The Press Can\u2019t Move On<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most Republicans in Congress focus on blocking President Biden\u2019s agenda to \u201crecklessly spend trillions of dollars, wreck the economy, \u00addeclare open borders, worsen the racial divide and mishandle a tense Middle East, not to mention pack the Supreme Court and make Washington, DC, a state,\u201d notes the Washington Examiner\u2019s Byron York<\/a>. They ousted Liz Cheney from leadership because she insisted that \u201cRepublicans must attack former President Donald Trump and his claim that the election was rigged before they could move on to pursuing their own agenda.\u201d And most in the media agree that \u201cRepublicans should not be able to discuss issues \u2014 cannot be believed on issues \u2014 until they banish Trump,\u201d no matter that the public wants Washington \u00adfocused on more urgent, forward-looking issues.<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Biden Taps a Kangeroo-Court Fan<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCatherine Lhamon, who served as assistant secretary for civil rights within President Barack Obama\u2019s Education Department,\u201d just got nominated for her old job, reports Robby Soave at Reason<\/a>. Under Obama, she \u201ccompelled colleges and universities to adopt sexual-misconduct procedures that violated the due-process and free-speech rights of accused students and professors.\u201d Team Trump reined in that madness, but if she is confirmed, free-speech activists warn, \u201cthe Department of Education will return to its discredited practice of trampling student rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
