“#Martin Freeman Method Acting Opinion: “Narcissistic Bollocks” \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Method acting is a divisive topic in Hollywood. Sometimes it results in the work of Marlon Brando, and sometimes it ends in Jared Leto sending rats to his costars. Clearly, not everyone is Brando. But for\u00a0Sherlock<\/em> and\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em> star\u00a0Martin Freeman<\/strong>, it\u2019s not the lack of a new-age Brando that is at fault, it\u2019s method acting in general<\/a>. Freeman recently took aim at method acting and at Jim Carrey\u2019s \u201cmethod\u201d performance in\u00a0Man on the Moon<\/em>\u00a0in a very well-articulated, profanity-laden rant against what he calls a \u201c\u2018selfish, narcissistic\u201d app<\/a>roach to acting.<\/p>\n

In a recent appearance on the\u00a0Off Menu<\/em> podcast\u00a0(via\u00a0The Telegraph<\/a>), Martin Freeman lambasted method acting as a \u201cpretentious\u201d Hollywood gimmick, calling it \u201ca highly impractical way of working, which is why I think it belongs more to the student and academic side than the practical ability side.\u201d Freeman added:<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, it\u2019s quite a pain in the [ass] when someone \u2018loses themselves.\u2019 It is a massive pain in the [ass] because it\u2019s no longer a craft and a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Freeman took aim at Carrey\u2019s performance in\u00a0Milo\u0161 Forman\u2019s 1999 Andy Kaufman biographical drama\u00a0Man on the Moon<\/em> in particular in his takedown of method acting. Carrey\u2019s behavior on set was notoriously aggressive and disruptive, going so far as to affect his own sense of self, as shown in the 2017 documentary\u00a0Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond<\/em>. And Freeman must have been watching that documentary recently, because he blasted Carrey\u2019s performance as a specific example of method acting gone too far:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, and I\u2019m genuinely sure Jim Carrey is a lovely and smart person, but it was the most self-aggrandizing, selfish, narcissistic fucking bollocks I have ever seen. The idea that anything in our culture would celebrate or support it is deranged, literally deranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Freeman added, \u201cYou need to keep grounded in reality, and that\u2019s not to say you don\u2019t lose yourself in the time between \u2018action\u2019 and \u2018cut,\u2019 but I think the rest of it is absolute pretentious nonsense and highly amateurish. It is not professional. Get the job done, do your work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman, of course, isn\u2019t the only one to think this way. There\u2019s a popular school of thought that method acting is just a gimmick that allows (usually male) actors to act like assholes on set. And British actors are famously disapproving of method acting, most of them having been trained professionally to \u2014 as Freeman said \u2014 get the job done and do your work. And it generally results in more fun behind-the-scenes footage, with Freeman having the time to joke around and frequently flash the middle finger<\/a> to people on set of\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em> instead of, you know, sending rat carcasses to his co-stars<\/a>.
