When you\u2019re working with other people, there\u2019s always going to be some moments of friction. Somebody\u2019s tone or off-hand comment might sound like an attack to you, whether they meant to or not. Those moments make work frustrating, so it\u2019s best to find a way to clear the air and move on.<\/p>\n

In my experience, the fastest way to resolve these things is to discuss them while they\u2019re happ<\/a>ening. Simply saying, \u201cThat sounds kinda harsh,\u201d right after someone makes an unnecessarily mean comment might be more efficient and lead to less drama than waiting for a couple of weeks to plan a meeting to discuss \u2018your language.\u2019<\/p>\n

Delivering this kind of feedback is challenging though. Luckily there\u2019s a bunch of books on this, which I can definitely recommend reading \u2014 but there\u2019s one thing you should do first.<\/p>\n

Before you start giving feedback to others, it might help to think about what causes your frustration in the first place.<\/p>\n

I get frustrated a lot\u2026 but I\u2019ve learned that my frustration usually comes from things going differently than I pictured them. Reality doesn\u2019t align with my perception, and that causes my brain to short circuit.<\/p>\n

This means I\u2019ll get angry with someone, but then I\u2019ll realize that they aren\u2019t stupid after all. They just did something I didn\u2019t expect or plan for. In other cases, I\u2019ll get annoyed about something, but when I stop to think about it, my frustration is more fundamental.<\/p>\n

For example, it grinds my gears when I see a large number of slides in a presentation. I\u2019ll start sulking and decide to talk to the person who made the presentation afterwards to explain that fewer slides are better than more slides.<\/p>\n

Is my real frustration with the number of slides though? Not really.<\/p>\n

I realize I\u2019m just more sensitive than usual because I\u2019m uncomfortable with the presentation\u2019s context. Maybe I don\u2019t want to be involved with the project being pitched. Or perhaps I\u2019m just wholly insecure about my role on the project and lash out.<\/p>\n

In the movie Interstellar<\/em>, there\u2019s a scene with a robot that explains its \u2018honesty parameter\u2019 is set to 90%. This raises some questions, to which the robot replies:<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolute honesty isn\u2019t always the most diplomatic nor the safest form of communication with emotional beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

I agree with the robot. Partly because if I would always honestly express what\u2019s on my mind \u2014 right at that moment \u2014 I\u2019d miss out on reflecting on the reasons behind my emotions.<\/p>\n

So suppressing some \u2018honesty\u2019 is a safer and more diplomatic way of communicating with emotional beings, including myself.<\/p>\n
