“#Upper East Dem club abandons Scott Stringer, backs Kathryn Garcia for mayor<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The largest Democratic political club on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side voted Thursday night to pull its endorsement of embattled Scott Stringer for mayor and selected Kathryn Garcia to replace him as its choice to run City Hall.<\/p>\n

The vote by the Four Freedoms Democratic Club is the latest blow to Stringer, the current city comptroller whose mayoral campaign stalled after a former volunteer from a prior 2001 campaign for public advocate accused him of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

Accuser Jean Kim alleged that Stringer repeatedly groped her and said, \u201cWhy won\u2019t you f\u2013k me?\u201d when she worked as an \u201cunpaid intern\u201d for his 2001 campaign. He was an assemblyman representing the Upper West Side at the time.<\/p>\n

Kim also filed a complaint against Stringer with the state attorney general<\/a>\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Stringer has denied wrongdoing but said he had a \u201cconsensual\u201d relationship with Kim. <\/p>\n

No other women have come forward to accuse Stringer of mistreatment since Kim\u2019s bombshell claim last month.<\/p>\n

The abandonment of Four Freedoms stings because the UES is supposed to be part of lifelong Manhattanite Stringer\u2019s political base.<\/p>\n

During a zoom meeting, club members voted 45 to 16 to rescind its backing of Stringer, a source close to Four Freedoms said.<\/p>\n

After several rounds of ranked choice voting, the club then tapp<\/a>ed Garcia, the former city Sanitation commissioner, as its mayoral choice for the June 22 Democratic primary.<\/p>\n

Erica Vladimer, the recording secretary, confirmed the votes but referred the Post to club president Jerry Ferguson for any comment.<\/p>\n

Vladimer is co-founder of the New York State Sexual Harassment Working Group. She\u2019s a former state Senate staffer whose forcible-kissing accusations against then-Sen. Jeff Klein (D-The Bronx) contributed to his 2018 defeat.<\/p>\n

Four Freedoms joins the Working Families Party and numerous elected officials who withdrew their support for Stringer following Kim\u2019s accusations.<\/p>\n

Stringer has carried on despite the loss of political support.<\/p>\n

The Stringer campaign had no immedia<\/a>te comment.<\/p>\n

He still has the support of the powerful teachers\u2019 union and other labor groups including Teamsters Local 237.<\/p>\n

The club \u2014 whose members reside in Roosevelt Island as well as the UES \u2014 is named after the four freedoms cited by former President Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt that belong to all Americans \u2014 Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
