“#Pro-Palestine, pro-Israel protesters clash in Times Square<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protesters clashed and fireworks sent people running near Times Square Thursday as tensions in the region spilled into the\u00a0streets\u00a0of Manhattan, videos showed.<\/p>\n

Skirmishes between the groups erupted in the Midtown tourist hub as Israel and Hamas hoped a cease-fire in Gaza would end more than 10 days of devastating hostilities.<\/p>\n

The protests came after Israel and Hamas had announced a cease-fire.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A firework was thrown from a pickup truck in the Diamond District on 47th Street, sending worried bystanders running for safety. The pickup truck was part of a convoy of vehicles waving Palestinian flags, sources said.<\/p>\n

A 55-year-old woman sustained burn injuries to her lower back.<\/p>\n

Footage,\u00a0posted to Twitter<\/a>\u00a0by freelance reporter Oliya Scootercaster, showed a pro-Israel demonstrator getting socked in the stomach after attempting to chase down a man who snatched an Israeli flag from his hands.<\/p>\n

UPDATE \u2013 NYPD now say these were two commercial fireworks, thrown from a car.<\/p>\n

More punches were thrown in tussles between the two sides as NYPD officers stepped in to separate them, according to the clip.<\/p>\n

The video later showed a pro-Palestine protester being put in handcuffs after he tried to run after a man who grabbed his Palestinian flag.<\/p>\n

Multiple arrests were made. Law enforcement sources said that at least 19 people were taken into custody.<\/p>\n

The bomb squad responded for what turned out to be fireworks and a device a source described as a \u201c60 second smoke generator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Protesters also threw\u00a0water\u00a0bottles and other projectiles at cops and pushed over planters and barriers in an attempt to block traffic, the sources said.<\/p>\n

Demonstrators from each side app<\/a>eared to have largely cleared out of the area by 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
