“#Another long, self-serious Zack Snyder film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A moment near the end of Zack Snyder\u2019s serviceable \u201cArmy of the Dead\u201d perfectly encapsulates the director\u2019s oeuvre. Imperiled, Dave Bautista\u2019s character Scott informs us that Las Vegas will be nuked in 9 minutes. <\/p>\n

How much movie is left at that point? A half-hour.<\/p>\n

Hollywood has never been a slave to the laws of space and time, but speaking for the fatigued eyeballs of America, 10 more minutes of this weightless film would\u2019ve been just fine. Two and a half hours is an eternity for a zombie flick.<\/p>\n

But Snyder likes to put butter on his butter (See: Zack Snyder\u2019s 4 hourslong \u201cJustice League.\u201d) And so the best aspects of \u201cArmy of the Dead\u201d are hindered by undue excess.<\/p>\n

The location, for instance, is brilliant \u2014 Las Vegas. For years, the gambling town has been beset by zombies and its once glittering exterior is now covered in rubble. Every buffet, hotel room, conference hall and casino is packed with the undead. Not unlike an average Friday at the MGM Grand.<\/p>\n

If you get a kick out of the Eiffel Tower being vaporized by aliens or Godzilla squatting in Madison Square Garden, you\u2019ll gobble up the decaying remnants of Caesars Palace, the Mirage and New York, New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The trouble is \u201cArmy of the Dead\u201d is also a heist movie, and robberies general<\/a>ly don\u2019t happ<\/a>en in broad daylight on the Strip<\/a>. The US government is about to bomb Vegas to obliterate the zombies, and right before it\u2019s blown to smithereens, Scott and his team plan to steal all the cash from a casino safe.<\/p>\n

So, most of the zombie skirmishes take place in generic, dark hallways surrounding the basement vault, well below the fun slot machines and blackjack tables upstairs.<\/p>\n

The group \u2014 a Saltine cracker-bland Ocean\u2019s Eleven \u2014 is extremely unmemorable. Comedia<\/a>n Tig Notaro is a pilot who\u2019s not allowed to be funny, Bautista\u2019s Scott is nonspecifically threatening, Dieter (Matthias Schweigh\u00f6fer) is German and Lily (Nora Arnezeder) is French. They\u2019d all make lousy dinner companions.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s partly because they\u2019d bore you to tears by reciting all the lame zombie rules. There is a zombie Queen and dumber zombie drones called \u201cshamblers.\u201d When shamblers get too dry, they become immobile, but then come back to life when it rains. They also hibernate, but wake up if you shine a light in their eyes. When they\u2019re killed, they let out a \u201cdeath cry.\u201d <\/p>\n

Guys, this isn\u2019t a Rick Steves travel special. Just kill some damn zombies!<\/p>\n

When the massacre starts, the movie gets better. But the methods of murder are, like everything else, awfully self-serious and limited to mostly just plain old guns and knives. The \u201cZombieland\u201d series<\/a> is much fresher and more clever in the subversive ways it uses to off the creatures.<\/p>\n

Snyder, on the other hand, can\u2019t help but treat a Las Vegas zombie heist movie like it\u2019s \u201cSaving Private Ryan.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
