{"id":25576,"date":"2020-07-11T21:39:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-11T18:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/brooklyn-college-unveils-anti-racist-agenda-for-professors\/"},"modified":"2020-07-11T21:39:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-11T18:39:00","slug":"brooklyn-college-unveils-anti-racist-agenda-for-professors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/brooklyn-college-unveils-anti-racist-agenda-for-professors\/","title":{"rendered":"#Brooklyn College unveils \u2018anti-racist agenda\u2019 for professors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Brooklyn College unveils \u2018anti-racist agenda\u2019 for professors<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        July 11, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 2:39pm         <\/p>\n<div id=\"featured-image-wrapper\">\n                        Enlarge Image<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brooklyn College President Michelle Anderson and Mayor Bill de Blasio\" id=\"standard-article-image\"  src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/200711-brooklyn-college-re-education3.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=618&#038;h=410&#038;crop=1\" ><\/img><br \/>\n                <span>Brooklyn College President Michelle Anderson and Mayor Bill de Blasio<\/span><br \/>\n                            <span>Paul Martinka<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n                        In what one professor calls \u201caffirmative action\u201d grading, Brooklyn College wants to \u201cre-educate\u201d instructors whose minority students have lousy grades, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>In an eight-point \u201canti-racist\u201d agenda shared with the school community this month, college president Michelle Anderson said the school had \u201crecently raised funds to offer professional development to faculty in classes with the highest racial disparities in outcomes\u201d and the most grades of D or F or withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must identify and address the structural obstacles that Black students and students of color more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly face at the College,\u201d she wrote, adding, \u201cWe need to create stronger systems of support for their academic and career success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one Brooklyn College professor said the plan sounded like \u201cgrade affirmative action,\u201d where students would be tracked by race, and the profs of failing students chastened by \u201cthe threat of a re-education camp and the accompanying stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The professor wondered if some faculty members would inflate grades \u201cin order to avoid the stigma of being subtly labeled a racist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Racial disparities, said the prof, could be linked to inequities in high school education, leaving \u201csome students under-prepared for college courses. In that case, offering more re<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>l courses would be a sounder strategy to address racial disparities in grade outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15970865\"><img alt=\"Brooklyn College\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Brooklyn College<\/span><span>Paul Martinka<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Anderson outlined an effort to \u201calter systems, policies, and practices\u201d in pursuit of educational equality at the public college, which is part of the taxpayer-funded City University of New York.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson highlighted \u201clistening sessions,\u201d greater diversity in hiring, staff mentoring to retain faculty and boosting \u201cculturally relevant programs at the College [to] ensure that we deepen our anti-racist pedagogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15970867\"><img alt=\"Brooklyn College\" data- data- height=\"450\" width=\"300\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Brooklyn College<\/span><span>Paul Martinka<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A college spokesman denied there would be grade inflation and said the \u201cprofessional development\u201d opportunities would be optional.<\/p>\n<p>A student\u2019s self-reported race is part of the demographic information the school already collects when students enroll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooklyn College is proactively addressing structural obstacles that students of color face every day,\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cThe college is enhancing faculty professional development to learn best practices in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for CUNY\u2019s faculty union did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>roximately 17,000 students attend the school in Midwood and 25 percent are white; 21 percent Hispanic; 19 percent black; 18 percent Asian, and 3 percent biracial or of other ethnicities.
