“#AP’s Emily Wilder fired over ‘biased’ pro-Palestinian tweets<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

An Associated Press reporter has been fired over pro-Palestinian tweets she posted while in college \u2013 and now she insists she\u2019s a victim of \u201ccancel culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily Wilder, a former Arizona Republic intern, started as an AP news<\/a> associate in Phoenix on May 3, but learned just 16 days later that her time at the 174-year-old news agency would abruptly end due to the \u201cclear bias\u201d it says she showed in her social media<\/a> posts, the Washington Post reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really devastating,\u201d Wilder told the newspaper of her termination, adding that she wasn\u2019t informed exactly which posts led to her dismissal.<\/p>\n

An AP spokesperson told the newspaper Wilder was fired for violating its media policy \u201cduring her time at AP\u201d \u2013 an app<\/a>arent reference to posts in which she veered from its apolitical stance for reporters as recently as Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Objectivity\u2019 feels fickle when the basic terms we use to report news implicitly stake a claim,\u201d Wilder posted<\/a>. \u201cUsing \u2018israel\u2019 but never \u2018palestine,\u2019 or \u2018war\u2019 but not \u2018siege and occupation\u2019 are political choices \u2013 yet media make those exact choices all the time without being flagged as biased.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Stanford College Republicans then picked up on Wilder\u2019s account<\/a> a day later, tweeting the group had unearthed a post she sent while at the college that referred to late Las Vegas casino magnate and Israel backer Sheldon Adelson as a \u201cnaked mole rat-looking billionaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilder, who is Jewish, told the Washington Post she was a member of the pro-Palestinian groups Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine while at Stanford University.<\/p>\n

Her previous post led the Stanford College Republicans to dub her an \u201canti-Israel agitator\u201d and share a photo<\/a> of Wilder leading a \u201cReturn the Birthright\u201d protest in New York in December 2017 against the Jewish student travel<\/a> program to Israel.<\/p>\n

The conservative group also highlighted an op-ed that Wilder wrote for the Stanford Daily in 2019 in which she referred to conservative pundit Ben Shapiro as a \u201clittle turd.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative news outlets like The Federalist claimed Wilder\u2019s posts raised \u201cadditional questions\u201d<\/a> about the Associated Press\u2019 reporting on the Israel-Hamas conflict amid the agency denying knowing that it operated a bureau in the same building as the militant Palestinian group that controls Gaza.<\/p>\n

Wilder said she thinks her former employer fired her in response to that criticism, adding she was told her posts were reviewed after the unwanted publicity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a result of the campaign against me,\u201d Wilder told the Washington Post. \u201cTo me, AP folded to the ridiculous demands and cheap bullying of organizations and individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

She acknowledged possibly violating AP\u2019s social media guidelines that bar employees from sharing political opinions, but claimed the policies are \u201cselectively enforced\u201d by design.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was transparent from the very beginning, and I have been transparent,\u201d Wilder said of being upfront about her activist past. \u201cYes, I had opinions in college, and yes, I still have opinions, because everybody has opinions. I have never denied any of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilder did not return a message seeking comment early Friday. She told SFGATE<\/a> she believes she was \u201ccanceled\u201d after Republicans such as Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton tweeted<\/a> about her hiring by the Associated Press \u2014 saying it was \u201cnot a surprise from a media organization that shared office space with Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Wilder said she regrets nothing as she looks for her next venture.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love journalism and part of what I think makes me such a capable, powerful journalist is how much I care about the people I write about, particularly the marginalized,\u201d she told SFGATE. \u201cThat\u2019s why I joined the Associated Press, and they saw me as capable. This is of course a really hard situation, and I\u2019m not sure what\u2019s going to happen next.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
