“#Firework hurled into crowd during wild Midtown protests<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Terrifying video shows the moment a firework was flung from a pickup truck full of Palestinian flag-waving protesters in Midtown\u2019s Diamond District on Thursday \u2014 as clashes over the trouble in the Middle East heated up in New York.<\/p>\n

The Twitter clip shows<\/a> one of several men in the vehicle throwing the \u201cFourth of July style\u201d device toward the sidewalk on West 47th Street near Fifth Avenue \u2014 and celebrating as it explodes. <\/p>\n

The firework went off near a 55-year-old woman, who was not shown on the video, as she was leaving work around 6 p.m., according to police sources. She suffered a burn and pain to her back \u2014 and her leather jacket and shirt were damaged \u2014 though she doesn\u2019t think the firework-flinger targeted her, according to the sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The victim went back inside and spoke to her co-workers, who advised her to go to the hospital, the sources said. She spotted an ambulance nearby and was taken to Bellevue Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Firework packaging and one mortar shell were recovered, according to police sources.<\/p>\n

Witness Ronen Ajadi, 28, of Great Neck, described the device as \u201ca Fourth of July style firework \u2014 it\u2019s something you see in the sky, not on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI started running,\u201d Ajadi said. \u201cIt exploded right behind me \u2026 I was less than two feet away \u2026 I couldn\u2019t hear anything after.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ajadi said he witnessed a parade of cars as people screamed, \u201cF\u2013k you, you Zionists\u201d and \u201cF\u2013k you, you pigs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then around 6:30 p.m., a 29-year-old man was attacked by a group of five or six men on Broadway near West 49th Street, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They allegedly knocked him to the ground while making anti-Semitic statements, punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed him and struck him with crutches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police searched the area and took 23-year-old Waseem Awawdeh, of Bay Ridge, into custody, cops said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He was charged with assault as a hate crime, gang assault, menacing, aggravated harassment as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.<\/p>\n

The other suspects remain at large.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is NO place for hate of ANY kind, against ANY group, by ANYONE in NYC,\u201d Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a strongly worded Friday tweet.<\/a> \u201cThis, and every incident, will be fully investigated by @NYPDHateCrimes<\/a> \u2014 as they always do. This is a time for NYers to come #together, to be New Yorkers above all else.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to preliminary numbers released by the NYPD, 26 people were arrested during the protest \u2014 including one person who will go through the system, seven who received desk app<\/a>earance tickets, 17 who were given summonses and one juvenile, according to police.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Skirmishes between the groups erupted in the Midtown tourist hub as\u00a0Israel and Hamas hoped a cease-fire\u00a0in Gaza would end more than 10 days of devastating hostilities.<\/p>\n
