At The Wall Street Journal, Gerard Baker wonders<\/a> if President Biden \u201cpeaked on Inauguration Day\u201d \u2014 as the old joke says the Chicago Cubs did every Opening Day. Biden\u2019s \u201cpromise to bring healing to a fractured nation didn\u2019t last the short ride back down Pennsylvania Avenue on Jan. 20.\u201d Now, the \u201csudden change\u201d in mask advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has \u201cundermined\u201d his claims to govern \u201cat all times by data and facts.\u201d The Gaza-Israel conflict was \u201canother unwelcome intrusion of reality into the wonder world of Democratic progressivism.\u201d And a week\u2019s worth of official economic data \u2014 revealing a \u201cslowdown in job growth, uptick in unemployment and [the] biggest leap in retail prices in more than a decade\u201d \u2014 directly \u201cchallenged\u201d Team Biden\u2019s \u201centire governing premise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Identity Politics for Kids<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to consciousness raising, you can never start too early,\u201d snarks Melanie McDonagh at Spectator USA<\/a>. Ibram X. Kendi\u2019s \u201cAntiracist Baby,\u201d a \u201cboard book for infants,\u201d tells tykes to \u201copen your eyes to all skin colors\u201d because claiming to be colorblind closes them \u201cto what\u2019s right in front of you.\u201d Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 \u201cThe Truths We Hold: Young Readers\u2019 Edition\u201d is another new book pushing \u201cidentity politics in the kindergarten.\u201d These works are part of a larger trend \u201cwhereby children\u2019s books are now overtly or subliminally designed to inculcate a set of app<\/a>roved values,\u201d including on \u201crace and sexuality.\u201d Sadly, this \u201creductionist take\u201d on kidlit won\u2019t \u201cmake children more likely to devour books\u201d and develop a lifelong love of reading.<\/p>\n

Economy watch: When States Nix Federal Funds<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201crare\u201d for a state to turn down federal money, especially to improve its own economy \u2014 yet several states are doing just that, observe the Washington Examiner\u2019s editors<\/a>. \u201cThe Biden administration\u2019s foolish decision to extend increased unemployment benefits through the summer is clearly retarding the job market\u2019s recovery.\u201d For many workers, \u201cthe increased benefit makes it at least as profitable not to work as it is to work. And how can you blame anyone for not working if it actually costs them money?\u201d Which is why states are now \u201ctaking matters into their own hands and cutting off expanded benefits, even though that means giving up federal money.\u201d And when their job markets recover rapidly, Biden \u201cwill be in a difficult place explaining why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Kushner Looks Wiser Than Ever<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Trump years had \u201cno greater laughingstock in the American foreign-policy cognoscenti than Jared Kushner,\u201d recalls Shany Mor at Newsweek<\/a>. Yet just four months after the establishment took over, the situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories took \u201ca dramatic turn for the worst.\u201d Kushner-era policies didn\u2019t \u201clead to an \u2018explosion,\u2019\u200a\u201d as the experts predicted time and again, but \u201cthe return of the experts . . . led to disaster.\u201d Above all, Team Biden\u2019s push for Palestinian elections \u2014 which were scheduled, then inevitably canceled, lest Hamas won \u2014 \u201cpromised to invite a violent provocation from Hamas to assert its primacy in Palestinian politics.\u201d We saw \u201cthat violence unfold\u201d over the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> beat: About Those \u2018UFOs\u2019 . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ambiguous infrared videos have stirred up concern that \u201cUFOs may pose a serious threat to national security,\u201d but \u201cthe videos disclosed so far all have obvious potential terrestrial explanations,\u201d notes Andrew Follett at National Review<\/a>. One is \u201calmost certainly a seabird or balloon distorted\u201d by the camera\u2019s parallax effect. Another seems to show \u201ca passenger plane from a distance.\u201d The last is easily explained by \u201ca meteor breaking up, or pieces of space junk burning up, in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u201d All these may have eventually been identified, but by letting the media<\/a> frenzy play out, the military can \u201cdivert attention from classified projects or accidents.\u201d While the \u201chuman fascination with UFOs\u201d hasn\u2019t changed, neither has \u201cthe weakness of the evidence that the unidentified objects are anything more alien than geese.\u201d <\/p>\n
