William Jackson Harper has scored an industry hat trick.<\/p>\n

The veteran stage and screen actor co-stars in Oscar winner Barry Jenkins\u2019 Amazon series<\/a> \u201cThe Underground Railroad\u201d and headlines Season 2 of \u201cLove Life\u201d (HBO Max), which just wrapp<\/a>ed shooting on its first episode in New York City.<\/p>\n

He also takes a memorable road trip<\/a> in the recently released movie \u201cWe Broke Up\u201d \u2014 or, as he calls it, \u201can indie anti<\/em>-rom-com\u201d co-starring Aya Cash (\u201cThe Boys\u201d). <\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts off with a couple who\u2019ve been together for 10 years. I play Doug, who asks his girlfriend, Lori [Cash], to marry him \u2014 and she throws up,\u201d said Harper, 41. \u201cThe movie takes off from there as they\u2019re heading to a wedding and trying to get through that weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really thorny thing when two people are in a relationship and love each other, but want different things. Somehow that feels very grown-up and interesting to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the TV front, Harper plays Royal in \u201cThe Underground Railroad,\u201d the 10-part Amazon series based on Colson Whitehead\u2019s 2016 alt-reality novel. Set in the 19th century deep South, it envisions a world in which slaves trying to escape to their freedom use an actual underground railroad \u2014 complete with train tracks, engineers, a conductor, etc. The series focuses on Cora (Thuso Mbedu) and Caesar (Aaron Pierre), who are attempting to flee from a Georgia plantation. Royal, who\u2019s also featured in the book, is a freeborn black man and an operator on the railroad who helps get passengers as far North as possible \u2014 and strikes up a friendship with Cora.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a real paradigm shift for Cora when she sees Royal because she says, \u2018He\u2019s just looking people in the eye and talking to them \u2014 there\u2019s nothing subservient about him,\u2019 \u201d Harper said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing about him that feels obsequious in any way, and that\u2019s something I held on to when trying to play the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to get a feel for how Royal moves through the world,\u201d Harper said. \u201cThere is such a thing as doing too much research for certain parts, but that wasn\u2019t the case with this piece. I think Royal has arrived at certain conclusions\u2026and I really latched on to that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew about the book for a while; it was one of those books I kept meaning to read but avoided because I knew it would upset me,\u201d he said. \u201cI knew the project was coming to the screen in some capacity, but I didn\u2019t think in a million years that I would get to audition for it, much less be involved. When I did read the book I couldn\u2019t put it down \u2014 it was heartbreaking and also very hopeful in moments and I was really cheering for Cora.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so effective, evocative, harrowing and important in so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harper, who played Chidi Adagonye on \u201cThe Good Place\u201d for all four seasons of the NBC afterlife sitcom \u2014 for which he received an Emmy nomination \u2014 pivots next to \u201cLove Life,\u201d taking over in the anthology series from Anna Kendrick\u2019s Season 1 character, Darby Carter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m playing Marcus,\u201d he said. \u201cThe first season was about what it is to be in New York in your 20s and finding love being a big part of that, along with a host of other issues tied to being a young person new to the city. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy story takes off from the point of view of a person who\u2019s lived in New York for a while, is a little more stable and a bit older [than Darby] and thinks his life is going to be this way going forward \u2014 and what happens when all of that is thrown up in the air\u2026what it\u2019s like to be older and trying to date and figure out who you are when everything you thought you were has completely shifted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exploring other issues through the lens of trying to found who you\u2019re meant to be with.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
