Before fur-loving baddie Cruella de Vil became a puppy killer,<\/a> she was a scrapp<\/a>y punk rocker with dreams of becoming a fashion designer \u2014 until she got hell-bent on revenge on her evil boss and, well, things got out of hand.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to \u201cCruella,\u201d the latest live-action Disney<\/a> movie that updates or provides a twist to one of its animated classics. This time, that classic is 1961\u2019s \u201cOne Hundred and One Dalmatians.<\/a>\u201d And the latest incarnation of the villainess, played by Emma Stone, not only gets a backstory, but an entire makeover.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we first meet Estella\u201d \u2014 that\u2019s Cruella\u2019s birth name \u2014 \u201cshe feels like a girl who\u2019s grown up in 1970s London,\u201d hair and makeup designer Nadia Stacey told Vogue<\/a>. \u201cThen, as the story progresses, she transforms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stacey, along with costume designer Jenny Beavan, had to show that change through 47 increasingly crazed looks, from bespectacled bereted naif who dyes her naturally black-and-white hair red to a deranged glamazon who embraces her wild two-toned tresses and dons a series<\/a> of spike-encrusted leather jackets, enormous deconstructed chiffon skirts, Ziggy Stardust-inspired face paint and Marie Antoinette-worthy updos. (The original cartoon villain, comparatively, had one ensemble \u2014 a white fur coat slung over a skimpy black slip dress \u2014 that she wore over and over again.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis character has been reworked several times throughout the years, and each time, it\u2019s been more edgy and using punk iconography,\u201d fashion historian Monica Sklar told The Post, citing the popular movie \u201cDescendants\u201d and the TV show \u201cOnce Upon a Time,\u201d not to mention Glenn Close\u2019s famous turn as Cruella in Disney\u2019s 1996 \u201c101 Dalmatians.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s effective stylistic shorthand. \u201cPunk has a strong sense of self, a questioning of authority and the conformity and rigidity of society that can become quite aggressively contrarian,\u201d said Sklar, an assistant professor at the University of Georgia who has written a book called \u201cPunk Style<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThere are many misnomers equating punk with nihilism,\u201d whereas, in truth, it\u2019s \u201cextremely self-expressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

It took a lot of work to land on an almost fantastical look that was still grounded in London in the 1970s. Beavan scoured costume houses, as well as vintage fairs and markets in London, New York City and Los Angeles for inspiration, lugging 10 suitcases worth of garments to Stone\u2019s home in LA. \u201cI think it was about six hours of fittings,\u201d Beavan told Vogue<\/a>. \u201cWe found the basis of the whole Cruella look. I don\u2019t think we used one actual piece [from the vintage pieces pulled], but we knew where we were going with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stone had 47 costume changes in the film, with her looks inspired by designers Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen and punk icons like the Sex Pistols.<\/figcaption>

That look consists of a strict color palette: black, white and gray, with red for dramatic moments, such as the vintage 1950s ruby gown \u2014 which in the film is designed by her former boss and nemesis, played by Emma Thompson. Stone\u2019s Cruella twists and shreds, so that it looks like a deranged Alexander McQueen dress. Beavan also had a vintage jacket remade and embellished it with dozens of safety pins and metals and paired it with an enormous organza skirt festooned with 5,060 handmade faux flower petals.<\/p>\n

Then there were the dozens of wigs and out-there makeup looks, which took inspiration from everything from 18th century Versailles to current drag culture. \u201cI watched \u2018RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u2019 while I was working [on the hair designs],\u201d Stacey told the website PopSugar<\/a>. \u201cThere was a massive picture of [goth-punk singer] Siouxsie [Sioux] in the corner of my makeup station,\u201d she said. \u201cSiouxsie\u2019s eyebrow shape was probably one of the first staple references [we had].\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet, as Cruella grows more evil, the grander her look gets, so that it far eclipses and goes beyond punk. Particularly when it comes to fur. \u201cThere\u2019s a long-standing relationship with punk and leather, as well as animal prints,\u201d said Sklar. \u201cBut fur, not so much.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
