“#New York nurses denounce new maskless guidelines<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

New York\u2019s largest nurses union says the state is not ready to unmask.<\/p>\n

The New York State Nurses Association, which represents 42,000 medical workers, issued a scathing press release<\/a> Friday slamming last week\u2019s CDC guidance that fully vaccinated individuals can forgo face coverings in most indoor settings.<\/p>\n

Officials in Albany adopted the federal mask guidelines days later.<\/p>\n

But the nurses said that the coronavirus crisis is \u201cfar from over\u201d \u2014 and that authorities should err on the side of safety, even if there is some \u201cunnecessary inconvenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNurses have experienced the devastating effects of this terrible disease first hand,\u201d NYSNA President Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez, RN wrote. \u201cTragically, they have watched patient after patient die. And they, along with other essential workers, have suffered extremely high infection rates themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNurses have despaired watching many states lift safety mandates too quickly leading to additional surges,\u201d Sheridan-Gonzalez added. \u201cLifting the indoor mask mandate too soon puts lives at risk, especially for those most vulnerable to COVID infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurses touted mandatory face-coverings as an \u201ceffective, fair, and social<\/a>ly responsible solution to curb transmissions of airborne viruses\u201d \u2014 and warned that voluntary mask-wearing causes \u201cinsufficient compliance and would potentially intensify stigmatization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement comes after a major national nurses union blasted the CDC ruling, and former surgeon general<\/a> Dr. Jerome Adams said the government \u201cfumbled\u201d the new edict.<\/p>\n

A recent Post report that found many New York City residents feel uncomfortable adhering to the new guidelines, and some businesses in the boroughs are still requiring vaccinated patrons to mask up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do trust the CDC but until I\u2019m 100 percent guaranteed that I\u2019m not going to get sick by other people, I\u2019m wearing my mask \u2014\u00a0 even if it\u2019s only a slight chance that I will get sick,\u201d one hospitality worker said Wednesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
