NFL assistant coach Eugene Chung says he was told Asians are not the \u201cright minority\u201d when he interviewed for a job this past offseason.<\/p>\n

Despite a resume that includes 55 game<\/a>s of experience as an NFL offensive tackle \u2013 the first Asian American first-round draft pick in history \u2013 and 10 seasons as an assistant coach under Super Bowl winners Andy Reid and Doug Pederson, Chung was turned away.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was said to me, \u2018Well, you\u2019re really not a minority,\u201d Chung told The Boston Globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chung is Korean, as are both of his parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Wait a minute. The last time I checked, when I looked in the mirror and brushed my teeth, I was a minority,\u201d Chung said. \u201cSo I was like, \u2018What do you mean I\u2019m not a minority?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The 51-year-old Chung did not name the team or the interviewer in the report, but he said he was told, \u201cYou are not the right minority we\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NFL has expanded the Rooney Rule to promote minority hiring beyond just head coach vacancies, to include front-office and coordinator positions. The rule is not intended to exclusively help black candidates gain opportunities, as it also app<\/a>lies to females, Latinos, Asians and other minority groups. Teams that develop minority candidates who are hired to premium positions are rewarded with extra draft picks.<\/p>\n

But Chung felt overlooked during his interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I realized what the narrative was,\u201d Chung said. \u201cI was blown away, emotionally paralyzed for a split second. I asked myself, \u2018Did I hear that correctly?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

He also asked the interviewer to elaborate, according to the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as the backtracking started, I was like, \u2018Oh no, no, no, no, no, you said it. Now that it\u2019s out there, let\u2019s talk about it,\u2019 \u201d Chung said. \u201cIt was absolutely mind-blowing to me that in 2021 something like that is actually a narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chung last was an assistant offensive line and tight ends coach for the Eagles in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sitting here bashing the league at all, because there are great mentors and there are great coaches that embrace the difference,\u201d Chung said. \u201cIt\u2019s just when the Asians don\u2019t fit the narrative, that\u2019s where my stomach churns a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
