In Adobe Photoshop, it\u2019s easy to quickly crop an image into a non-rectangular shape such as a circle, which can come in handy when visualizing round social media<\/a> headshots. Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n

First, open the image that you want to crop with Photoshop on your Mac or Windows computer. In the Photoshop window, find the \u201cLayers\u201d panel, which is located in the sidebar on the right. In the Layers panel, find the \u201cBackground\u201d layer and click the lock icon next to it. If there\u2019s no lock icon, you don\u2019t have to do anything.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t see the Layers panel, click \u201cWindow\u201d in the menu bar and select \u201cLayers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

In the vertical toolbar, right-click the Marquee Tool icon (that looks like a rectangle with a dotted outline) and select \u201cElliptical Marquee Tool.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

Now that the elliptical selection tool is activated, hold down the Shift key and use your mouse or trackpad to draw a perfect circle outline over the area that you want to crop in your photo. If you don\u2019t use the Shift key, you\u2019ll draw an ellipse.<\/p>\n

\"Make<\/p>\n

After you make the selection, right-click the selected area on your photo and click \u201cSelect Inverse.\u201d This selects everything in your photo except for the circled area.<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

If you use Windows, press the Backspace key. If you\u2019re on Mac, press the Delete key. This removes the area that\u2019s outside the circle in your photo.<\/p>\n

\"Circled<\/p>\n

Your photo still has a lot of unused area around it. To remove this area, click Image > Trim in the Photoshop menu bar.<\/p>\n

\"Trim<\/p>\n

In the Trim window, select \u201cTransparent Pixels\u201d in the \u201cBased On\u201d section. Then, make sure that all the boxes in the \u201cTrim Away\u201d section are checked, and click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Remove<\/p>\n

The canvas size of the image will be reduced to just the circle portion that you cropped out of the image.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

To save this image, click File > Save As in the menu bar.<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

In the Save As window, select \u201cPNG\u201d from the \u201cFormat\u201d menu. The PNG format preserves transparency (which your circle-shaped photo uses), but JPEG doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\"Save<\/p>\n

Then, enter a name for your photo, select a folder to save it in, and click \u201cSave\u201d at the bottom of the window. That\u2019s it!<\/p>\n
