Tens of thousands of spectators are expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith so much interest we could have had more if space would allow, but parades can only be so long,\u201d said Judi Gulledge, who is coordinating the event.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s definitely not a Mardi Gras parade: Those can only be held during Mardi Gras, the period before Lent. But it will feel a lot like one, which is a big part of the goal after months of lockdowns, illness, deaths and face masks. Call it Tardy Gras, perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the past 14 months to 16 months or so it\u2019s been very difficult to make it all work, but this is a real blessing,\u201d Stephen Toomey, who owns a Mardi Gras supply company, told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10tv.com\/news\/mobile_county\/mardi-gras-in-may-parade-set-to-roll-friday-night-to-celebrate-the-commissioning-of\/article_10fdc14c-b84d-11eb-b1c5-67573529bce9.html?block_id=1002168\">WALA-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Statewide hospitalizations from COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, are at the lowest point since April 2020, although more than 11,000 have died in Alabama and more than 540,000 have been infected. With only about a quarter of the state\u2019s population fully vaccinated, the state\u2019s immunization rate has trailed the nation for months.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccination rates in Mobile County roughly mirror those of the state, with about 25% of the area\u2019s more than 400,000 residents immunized. Unless large numbers of people break the state\u2019s established pattern and heed the latest federal\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-masks-cdc-guidelines-9d10c8b5f80a4ac720fa1df2a4fb93e5\">guidelines<\/a>\u00a0about face masks, large numbers of unvaccinated, unmasked people could clog the parade route.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bernard Eichold, the Mobile County health officer, said health officials hope people will follow safety recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, al.com reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike during a traditional Mardi Gras event, everyone needs to exercise personal safety and have a safe and wonderful event,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Float riders toss beads and other items to crowds during a Mardi Gras parade in Mobile, Ala. The original parade route was expanded because of the high level of interest, Gulledge said, and 21 Mardi Gras societies are participating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur downtown hotels are just about sold out,\u201d she said. Restaurants and bars are planning special events and deals.<\/p>\n<p>While the parade\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> is \u201cCelebrating Mardi Gras\u201d and Mobile, it\u2019s actually meant to mark the commissioning of the Navy\u2019s new ship USS Mobile, a shallow-water combat vessel manufactured in Mobile.
