\n David Oyelowo says his 2014 movie \u201cSelma\u201d was robbed of its chance at Oscars glory by a peeved and prejudiced Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

The British-American actor, who was nominated for playing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie, told ScreenDaily Thursday that the cast\u2019s solidarity with protesters after Eric Garner\u2019s death at the hands of a cop on Staten Island rubbed voters the wrong way that year.<\/p>\n

\u201cSix years ago, \u2018Selma\u2019 coincided with Eric Garner being murdered,\u201d Oyelowo, 44, said. \u201cThat was the last time we were in a place of \u2018I Can\u2019t Breathe.\u2019 I remember at the premiere of \u2018Selma\u2019 us wearing \u2018I Can\u2019t Breathe\u2019 T-shirts in protest. Members of the academy called into the studio and our producers saying, \u2018How dare they do that? Why are they stirring s\u2009-\u2009-\u2009t?\u2019 and \u2018We are not going to vote for that film, because we do not think it is their place to be doing that.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor added: \u201cIt\u2019s part of why that film didn\u2019t get everything that people think it should\u2019ve got and it birthed #OscarsSoWhite \u2026 They used their privilege to deny a film on the basis of what they valued in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Twitter<\/a>, the film\u2019s director Ava DuVernay backed Oyelowo\u2019s account.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrue story,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In response to DuVernay\u2019s tweet, the Academy wrote: \u201cAva & David, we hear you. Unacceptable. We\u2019re committed to progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paramount Pictures said Friday \u201cSelma\u201d will be free to rent on streaming services for the month of June as Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others become more widespread.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
