“#Yankees don\u2019t see Aaron Judge\u2019s stiff neck as long-term problem<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Aaron Judge was removed from the starting lineup of Saturday\u2019s simulated game<\/a> at Yankee Stadium with a stiff neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s that big a deal,\u201d Aaron Boone said following the game. \u201cIt just locked up on him when he woke up. He slept on it a little weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge got treatment on it and Boone hopes Judge can play in Sunday\u2019s sim game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t expect it to be a long-term thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was replaced in right field by Tyler Wade.<\/p>\n

Judge is coming back from a fractured rib that sidelined him in spring training, but he said he\u2019d be ready for Opening Day of the upcoming 60-game season, which is scheduled for July 23 at Washington.<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Masahiro Tanaka played catch in the outfield on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, as the right-hander continues to progress from the concussion he suffered last Saturday, when he was drilled in the head by a Giancarlo Stanton line drive that was clocked at 112 mph.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re moving slowly with Masa, making sure he\u2019s able to play catch a couple of times now,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cHe\u2019s responded well to an elevated heart rate on the bike and elliptical and with his arm care work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tanaka remains in the concussion protocol and the Yankees have not determined when he might pitch again or if he\u2019ll be ready for the start of the regular season.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime we\u2019re talking about a concussion, we make sure we\u2019re moving slowly and smartly,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cThere\u2019s no plan in place exactly when exactly things are gonna happ<\/a>en, but he is at least responding how we\u2019d hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n

James Paxton said Tanaka\u2019s improvement has been \u201camazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe seems great,\u2019\u2019 the left-hander said. \u201cHe seems completely normal. I think we got extremely lucky in that situation. It could have been way worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Clarke Schmidt gave up a run in 2 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings in Saturday\u2019s sim game and is looking forward to pitching at the Stadium in a regular season game \u2014 and at some point, in front of fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here to compete,\u2019\u2019 said Schmidt, one of the team\u2019s top prospects. \u201cI\u2019ve always been a guy that performs with a chip on his shoulder. My attitude, I wouldn\u2019t call it Napoleanic, but almost an underdog. That people doubt me, even if that may not be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while being on the mound at an empty ballpark was fine, Schmidt said he wants \u201cto be able to pitch in a full Yankee Stadium. That\u2019s always been one of my dreams. It\u2019s one of the things I\u2019m looking forward to whenever it\u2019s safest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Paxton threw at the Stadium on Friday to stay on schedule, even though the simulated game was rained out. He threw 66 pitches in the equivalent of five innings.<\/p>\n

Boone stood in the batter\u2019s box with Paxton on the mound.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was standing in a lot, so he had a menacing hitter looking at him,\u2019\u2019 Boone said.<\/p>\n

Paxton, who underwent back surgery in February, felt good and said he was working on his arm angle, which had been \u201ca little low\u201d in spring training 2.0.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was hurt, I had pain going down my left leg, from my glut down to my calf,\u2019\u2019 Paxton said. \u201cI don\u2019t have that anymore. I\u2019m feeling strong. The next step for me is finding velocity.\u201d<\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t think that will happen until he\u2019s in a live game closer to Opening Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be good to see when I\u2019m in the mid-to-high 90s,\u2019\u2019 Paxton said. \u201cThat would show me I\u2019m 100 percent back.\u201d<\/p>\n

He expects to have two more simulated games before the season starts.<\/p>\n

Asked if he\u2019d be ready for the season opener, Paxton said: \u201cI\u2019d better be\u2026 I\u2019m gonna be as ready as I can possibly be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

The Yankees toyed with the idea of a five-man infield last year and they did it again on Saturday with Zack Britton on the mound in what Boone called \u201cThe Zack Britton package.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe almost used it in a game last year,\u2019\u2019 Boone said.<\/p>\n

Tyler Wade and Aaron Hicks are two outfielders who can shift to the infield to take advantage of Britton\u2019s ability to induce ground balls. Hicks, though, missed much of last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the right matchup came along, we probably wouldn\u2019t hesitate to go with it,\u2019\u2019 Boone said.<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Boone addressed players in various groups on Saturday, instead of addressing the entire team at once to promote social<\/a> distancing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m having conversations with a number of different groups, picking spots where I can do it in smaller groups when I would normally address the team as a whole,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cI did that three or four different times [Saturday].\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
