“#NJ shooting survivors recall horror as possible motive surfaces<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Shaken partygoers at the New Jersey barbecue-turned-mass shooting recounted the horror to The Post on Sunday \u2014 as one said the violence stemmed from a decades-old turf war.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was sitting on a chair talking to my daughter and a friend. We were laughing. Next thing I knew, I hear shots fired, like 20 shots,\u2019\u2019 Sunshine Carter, 44, said of the deadly gunfire that broke out at a sprawling home in Fairfield Township in southern Cumberland County late Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen it stopped, then 10, 15 more,\u2019\u2019 Carter said of the bullets. \u201cI didn\u2019t know if they had to reload. I didn\u2019t know if it was two shooters, one shooter. I was running for my dear life.<\/p>\n

\u201cA girl ran in front of me, got shot. It could have been me. My friend was trying to help her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two people were killed in the carnage: a 25-year-old woman and 30-year-old man.<\/p>\n

Some guests suggested that the man was the target \u2014 with the shooting stemming from two local rival factions of young men.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s South Side young boys vs. North Side young boys,\u2019\u2019 said a female guest who asked not to be identified.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been going on since the \u201960s, and now they\u2019re getting crazier with it. They\u2019re bringing guns.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsually, when they do that, they let off a couple [rounds], and that\u2019s it,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201c But last night, they just kept going. People were running, falling. People were dying. It went on for 5, 10 minutes, running from bullets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carter said the female homeowner is a \u201cfamily-oriented woman\u201d who was throwing a 1990s-theme<\/a>d birthday bash for her nephew complete with a DJ, tents and security when shots rang out at the house across from a cemetery in the bucolic area. <\/p>\n

The guest described how she frantically searched for her kids amid the chaos.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re grown, but they\u2019re still my kids. I\u2019m running around looking for them, I can\u2019t find them. I can\u2019t find my phone to call them,\u2019\u2019 Carter recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m being trampled on. All because we had a family barbecue. We were having a good day, a good time. These idiots just come in and shoot innocent people, and for what? Why? Just crazy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t see anybody arguing before. It was just out of the blue \u2014 pop, pop, pop, pop, pop \u2014 and we hauled a\u2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never been through anything like this before. This is a family home,\u201d Carter said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd to come when everyone\u2019s having a good time and just start shooting? Come on now, you bastards.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
