It includes things like when a photo was taken, what camera and settings it was taken with, the resolution of the image, and who took it (copyright metadata).<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Image_Files_Get_Metadata\"><\/span>How Image Files Get Metadata<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Some of this metadata, such as information about the lens you used, is added automatically by your camera. However, other pieces of metadata, such as information about when a file was last opened, are kept up to date by your computer.<\/p>\n<p>But you can also add some important bits of metadata yourself, such as copyright information and contact details. Here\u2019s how to do it in Adobe Photoshop.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_View_a_Photos_Metadata_in_Photoshop\"><\/span>How to View a Photo\u2019s Metadata in Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Open the photo that you want to edit in Photoshop and go to File &gt; File Info. (You can also use the keyboard shortcut Control-Alt-Shift-I on a Windows PC or Command-Option-Shift-I on a Mac.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-725948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-30-at-10.02.15.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"image info option highlighted\" width=\"650\" height=\"400\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This will bring up the file information window.<\/p>\n<p>To add or edit something, click on it and start typing. When you\u2019re done, click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Not all metadata is editable. Some things, like the camera that was used or the date upon which the file was created, are automatically set.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-725949 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-30-at-10.03.45.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"file information window\" width=\"650\" height=\"445\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The metadata is described <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/3607085\/type\/am\/sid\/725946\/https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/xmp.html\">using a standard called XMP<\/a>. It\u2019s split into 12 categories in the left sidebar, although not all of them are relevant to images. They are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Basic<\/strong> is some of the most important metadata, like the file\u2019s author, the copyright status, and the copyright information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camera Data<\/strong> is all of the information about the image added by the camera.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong> is information about when the original work was created. For example, if I scanned a historic photo today, it would have a file creation date of 2021.\u00a0However, the original photo is obviously much older.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IPTC<\/strong> and <strong>IPTC Extension<\/strong> are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/iptc.org\/standards\/photo-metadata\/iptc-standard\/\">the International Press Telecommunications Council\u2019s metadata standards<\/a>. This is used to add information about and categorize <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, stock, and other professional photographs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPS Data<\/strong> is information about exactly where an image was taken.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audio Data<\/strong> and <strong>Video Data<\/strong> are only relevant for those particular file types. They\u2019re things like artist, album, and frame rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photoshop<\/strong> is an optional (and rarely used) log of the edits made to a file.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DICOM<\/strong> is medical metadata like patient name and file number.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AEM Properties<\/strong> is things related to an Adobe enterprise service. It\u2019s not relevant to photographers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raw Data<\/strong> enables you to see the raw XMP structure with all of the metadata that\u2019s embedded in the file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Metadata_Should_I_Add\"><\/span>What Metadata Should I Add?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>OK, so there\u2019s a lot of metadata categories available, but not many of them are relevant to photographers\u2014some aren\u2019t even editable. My lovely photo of a cow, for example, doesn\u2019t need the same metadata categories as an x-ray.<\/p>\n<p>Most photo metadata either tells other people who created the file and other information about it\u2014or makes it easier for you to search and sort things. Some of the information worth adding is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Basic, add your name to \u201cAuthor,\u201d under \u201cCopyright Status,\u201d select \u201cCopyrighted,\u201d and add your website or contact details to \u201cCopyright Notice.\u201d This will list the file as copyrighted anywhere that supports metadata. You can also use this to release your work under a Creative Commons license.<\/li>\n<li>In Basic, add information about the photo to \u201cRating,\u201d \u201cDe<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion,\u201d and \u201cKeywords\u201d that you want to use to sort it. Apps like Adobe Bridge, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and other file browsers will be able to read it and enable you to filter by them.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to keep your family photos incredibly well sorted or arranged like a neat archive, fill in as much of the information in Origin as is relevant.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to sell your images to news organizations or through stock photo sites, or otherwise release them professionally, fill in as much of the IPTC and IPTC Extension sections as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-725950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-30-at-11.00.36.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"copyright metadata\" width=\"650\" height=\"269\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/h2>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_the_Metadata_Stay_with_the_File\"><\/span>Does the Metadata Stay with the File?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Metadata stays embedded in a file\u2014unless you, or someone else, removes it. Even when you change a file type, say, by converting a RAW image file to a Photoshop file, it will be conserved. If you upload it to your website and someone downloads it, they\u2019ll be able to read it all using Photoshop or another app.<\/p>\n<p>However, some metadata is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iptc.org\/standards\/photo-metadata\/social-media-sites-photo-metadata-test-results-2019\/\">regularly stripped by social media sites, file storage apps, and other web services<\/a>. Some keep the camera information, but others, like Instagram, s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> everything, including copyright details.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a case to be made for removing metadata before uploading your images, as it can identify you or your subjects. The Export As feature in Photoshop (File &gt; Export &gt; Export As), for example, gives you the option to either embed \u201cCopyright and Contact Info,\u201d or no metadata at all.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like to leave copyright information embedded in my images.
