\n Rodions Kurucs said at last year\u2019s All-Star weekend, when he participated in the Rising Stars Challenge, he has a better 3-point shot than Latvian countryman Kristaps Porzingis.<\/p>\n

Kurucs will get to prove it as he\u2019s ready to assume the starting power-forward slot, with multiple Nets injured or opting out of the NBA restart in Orlando.<\/p>\n

The only threat to the 22-year-old\u2019s job is newly signed Michael Beasley, whom, interestingly, has caught Kurucs\u2019 eye previously. Kurucs watched a lot of Knicks contests because of Porzingis.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a great player,\u2019\u2019 Kurucs said Saturday of Beasley, following the Nets\u2019 third practice. \u201cI was watching him when he played in New York. When he was doing really great, I was watching him. He was one of my favorite players when he played with the Knicks back then.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beasley will miss the first five game<\/a>s to serve out his drug suspension, so Kurucs will be the starter by default. Kevin Durant decided not to play in the restart, Taurean Prince tested positive for COVID-19, Wilson Chandler backed out because of fear of infection and Nic Claxton just had shoulder surgery.<\/p>\n

So here comes Kurucs, who gives the Nets another outside-shooting dimension. He\u2019s been spotted also at center, giving them a chance to spread the court fully.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we can do five-out with Rodie,\u2019\u2019 point guard Chris Chiozza said. \u201cWith him at the 5, it gives us the threat of him being able to shoot.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a rough season for Kurucs, a 2018 second-round pick who app<\/a>eared in just 39 games. He dealt with allegations of domestic assault in September and inconsistent play that had the 6-foot-9, 228-pound big man demoted to the Long Island Nets. This came after starting 46 games last season on a playoff squad.<\/p>\n

Kurucs said he has been told he will have to play some center.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis opportunity\u2019s great for me, but we still have new guys coming over,\u2019\u2019 Kurucs said.<\/p>\n

Because of the limited gym space in the Disney bubble, some of the 22 teams are forced into practicing on makeshift courts set up in convention center ballrooms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe [this is] our third ballroom,\u2019\u2019 interim coach Jacque Vaughn after the team\u2019s third practice. \u201cWe\u2019ve rotated. I think overall they\u2019re changing up the location to give a fair playing field for everyone. One of our assistant coaches, Bret Brielmaier, he\u2019s keeping notes of the surroundings and which one he likes best. We\u2019re enjoying it. It\u2019s good to hear the ball bouncing again.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

After the Nets\u2019 summer splash last July, who figured the face of the franchise in Orlando would be Caris LeVert? And he\u2019s acting that way with Durant, Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie and DeAndre Jordan at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he just has that different swagger about himself,\u2019\u2019 Vaughn said. \u201cHe\u2019s put in work individually on his game during this hiatus, I think you can sense it in the way his shoulders are in the way he\u2019s carrying himself. He\u2019s eye contact, his leadership, he would be a guy that initially has looked really good.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
