Demon Slayer \u2013 Kimetsu No Yaiba \u2013 The Movie: Mugen Train\u00a0<\/em>is now the second top-grossing anime movie in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Funimation, who is one of the US distributors for the movie, said on May 22 that Mugen Train <\/em>ended Friday with takings of $43,956,487, beating out Pok\u00e9mon: The Movie 2000\u00a0<\/em>in the process. Pok\u00e9mon: The First Movie<\/em> currently remains the top-grossing anime movie in the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mugen Train<\/em>\u2018s US success is the latest in a series<\/a> of record-breaking achievements, which include being the top-grossing film of 2020 and beating out Studio Ghibli\u2019s Spirited Away<\/em> to be the highest-grossing film in Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mugen Train<\/em>, which released in Japan in October 2020 and in the US in April 2021, is a sequel to the Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba-<\/i> anime series, which aired in 2019 with 26 episodes and is set to receive a second anime season in 2021. Both are based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotoge, which was first serialized in 2016 in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and ended with 211 chapters in 2020 with a total of 23 tank\u014dbon volumes published.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the Taisho Period in Japan. Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon. To make matters worse, his younger sister Nezuko, the sole survivor, has been transformed into a demon herself. Though devastated by this grim reality, Tanjiro resolves to become a \u201cdemon slayer\u201d so that he can turn his sister back into a human, and kill the demon that massacred his family.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
