The Indian government has asked social media companies such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to remove all posts that refer to one of the new coronavirus strains as the \u201cIndian variant.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a notice<\/a> issued on Friday, the country\u2019s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology<\/a> (MEITY) said that posts mentioning \u201cIndian variant\u201d count as false news<\/a>. The ministry reasoned that the strain is officially known as B.1.617, so there\u2019s no need for attaching a geographical tag to it.<\/p>\n

The ministry also wrote a letter to social platforms earlier this month to curb misinformation and imposter accounts related to COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified B.1.617 as \u201ca variant of global concern,\u201d<\/a> the health agency\u2019s guidelines for naming disorders discourage associating names of countries or places to a disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Various media outlets have colloquially referred to some strains as \u201cthe British Strain\u201d or \u201cthe South African Strain,\u201d<\/a> but the scientific naming is the correct way to write about these variants.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve asked Facebook and Twitter to provide information on actions they\u2019re taking on this matter, and we\u2019ll update the post if we hear back.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Global Times reacted to this notice by saying the Indian media is showing \u201cdouble standards\u201d as some publications have published reports in the past noting that the coronavirus originated from China<\/a>. Last March, a report published by\u00a0<\/span>L1ght<\/a>, a company that specializes in measuring online toxicity, noted that hate towards China on Twitter increased by 900% after the pandemic started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India is going through a surging wave of COVID-19 infections as the country has registered for more than 200,000 cases for over a month \u2014 the B.1.617 variant is believed to be the cause of this dangerous phase<\/a>, which has taken a toll on India\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
