Is this a crime of fashion?<\/p>\n

A Florida designer has claimed Converse stole her sneaker design after noticing their new line bore an uncanny resemblance to prototypes she submitted on a rejected internship app<\/a>lication two years back. A video posted Saturday detailing the alleged shoe theft currently now boasts 9.1 million views on TikTok. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a coincidence,\u201d Cecilia Monge, 22, laments in the clip<\/a>, which she initially hesitated to make as she doubted the shoe giant had seen her original concepts. However, the aspiring footwear maven eventually took it to TikTok after her family convinced her she\u2019d been the target of a sneaker attack.<\/p>\n

In the viral video, the designer recounted how she applied for the design internship with Nike-owned footwear firm in 2019, for which she sent designs for \u201cNational Park\u201d-inspired kicks with her application.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted the position,\u201d Monge told fashion blog Diet Prada<\/a> of the inspiration behind her pitch. \u201cI thought I should show initiative and create my own line of Converse to show them I could be successful in the role if they hired me, which is a common practice in design roles.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the budding designer never heard back from Converse, per the clip. Then, in May, she saw an internet advert showcasing the shoe purveyor\u2019s new range of National Park-themed shoes \u2014 which looked eerily similar to her prospective pair.<\/p>\n

In order to illustrate the resemblance, Monge shared a side-by-side comparison of one of her designs \u2014 called the Grand Canyon \u2014 and the newly released Unisex Converse Chuck 70 National Parks High Top in Red Bark<\/a>. Both the original and alleged knockoff feature brown, red, yellow and orange strip<\/a>es, the latter of which Converse claimed was \u201cinspired by vistas of national parks\u201d on its site.<\/p>\n

Another one of Monge\u2019s submissions, dubbed \u201cYellowstone\u201d due to its geothermal-themed color pattern, also has a Converse doppelganger<\/a>, which looks identical to hers down to \u201cthe order of the colors and the actual hues,\u201d she fumed. Neither of the designs are available on the shoe brand\u2019s US website, but can be purchased in Australia<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The crushed creator found the resemblance especially suspect as Converse \u201cdidn\u2019t assign an interview project or ask us to design a line for the national parks,\u201d she told Diet Prada.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI 100% came up with designs and the concept on my own and sent it in to them in good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post has reached out to Converse for comment, but has yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of just unfortunate when larger companies borrow from smaller designers,\u201d Monge lamented in the clip. <\/p>\n

Fortunately, Monge\u2019s TikTok fashion statement lit a fire in the peanut gallery, who lambasted Converse over their alleged shoe robbery. <\/p>\n

\u201c@converse why are you stealing from professionals and also not even hiring them,\u201d wondered one supporter of the devastated designer.<\/p>\n

Another wrote, \u201cDo better @converse and PAY UP.\u201d<\/p>\n

One fan told Monge she would buy her shoes over the Converse version any day. <\/p>\n

\u201cU have no idea HOW much that makes me feel better,\u201d gushed Monge in response. \u201cAppreciate you!\u201d<\/p>\n

The bedraggled sneaker artist hopes her saga can help shed light on the larger trend of big businesses pilfering from anonymous creators. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hoping for more people to care about large companies stepping on the little guy, and to learn more about how often large companies are powered by the creativity of people they didn\u2019t even give the time of day,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
