\n Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, said there\u2019s \u201cno way\u201d schools across the country could reopen this fall because of a lack of federal funding.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way that you\u2019re going to have full-time schools for all the kids and all the teachers the way we used to have it,\u201d Weingarten told John Catsimatidis on his AM 770 WABC radio show on Sunday. \u201cOnce we have a vaccine, I hope we can get back to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The School Superintendent Association estimated that it would cost an average of $1.8 million per school district to adhere to guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reopen this fall.<\/p>\n

But, so far, the Trump administration hasn\u2019t said whether additional funds would be available.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in doing this, not only is there a [need] for retrofitting, for ventilation systems, but also for buying the damned masks for the cleaning equipment, for the nurses that we\u2019re going to need. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve been pushing really hard \u2026 To get the [federal] money that states need\u2026 to re-open schools,\u201d Weingarten said.<\/p>\n

At a coronavirus briefing last week, Vice President Mike Pence and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said reopening schools was essential to students\u2019 well being and mental health.<\/p>\n

DeVos, during an interview on \u201cFox News<\/a> Sunday,\u201d reemphasized that students must return to their classrooms.<\/p>\n

\u201cKids have got to get back to school,\u201d she said, adding that\u201dkids cannot afford to not continue learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeVos said it is \u201cnot a matter of if\u201d this happ<\/a>ens, but \u201ca matter of how.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
